If you want to earn money from a website, you must first attract visitors to the site. It's similar to having a store on the high street or in a retail mall. If no one discovers your store and enters, it makes no difference how elegant your products are or how competitive your prices are; you will never generate any sales until you begin attracting potential consumers. In the world of internet commerce, the same rules apply. No visitors to your site equates to no potential customers stepping into your physical store, resulting in no sales. As a result, you must employ strategies and approaches that will ensure that your site receives hundreds, if not thousands, of daily visitors. There are numerous ways to accomplish this, and once your firm is established, you should employ every traffic generation technique available to maximize the number of visits you receive. However, some of the quickest and most efficient techniques to persuade people to visit your sales page also need money, which you may not have accessible right now. For instance, employing Google's AdWords Pay-Per-Click internet advertising program will result in people landing on your page within hours, making it incredibly efficient in this regard. However, unless you are quite knowledgeable with AdWords, it can be an extremely expensive method of getting traffic, and the number of inexperienced internet marketers who have been severely 'burned' by their first few AdWords ads is legion. Additionally, there is another issue to consider. While online advertising programs such as AdWords remain incredibly effective, their effectiveness is dwindling as people become more aware that when they see 'Sponsored Links' on a page, they are viewing paid advertising. People in general, and internet users in particular, appear to have a growing aversion to visiting websites that employ paid advertising to market their products and services, maybe because they feel that websites that pay to advertise will always be those attempting to sell them something. Despite what those of us who manage internet-based businesses would like to believe, the majority of people do not use the internet to make purchases. They do so in order to obtain information and answers to their questions, and in most cases, they are attempting to obtain this information for free.

When this element is considered, it seems obvious that consumers would avoid clicking on advertisements whenever feasible.

At the same time, the manner in which these information seekers seek out the information they desire is largely set in stone. They'll launch their preferred search engine, enter in the word or phrase they're looking for, and press the 'Enter' key.

This will bring up a page of search engine results, with the top 10 most popular sites connected to that phrase on the left and a few advertisements on the right.

Recent study indicates that searchers nearly always click on the top results on the left side of the page and then scroll through the top ten results to locate what they're looking for.

If consumers are unable to locate the information they are looking for this way, they may click on an advertisement or proceed to the second page of results and examine the natural (organic) search results that appear in positions 11-20 for the phrase they searched.

If you can rank your web pages in the first ten or twenty natural search engine results, your chances of attracting people are extremely high. Of course, this is also the ambition of everyone else, which means that competition for the coveted top ten slots can be exceedingly severe.

Regardless of the competition, you must do everything possible to have your website featured, and one way to do so is by implementing what are known as search engine optimization (or SEO) tactics during the page construction process.

Certain SEO strategies are referred to as 'white hat,' while others are referred to as 'gray hat,' and finally, there are 'black hat' SEO tactics. This book is concerned with the latter, thus the first thing to consider is what exactly are black hat SEO practices.

Exactly like in the movies... As in classic 'Western' cowboy films, the concept of black and white hat methods is intended to distinguish the good men from the bad. However, it is critical to understand who defines the good guys in white hats and the wicked guys in black hats. The first and perhaps most important point to make about those who employ black hat tactics is that they are not breaking any laws (at least, not in the majority of cases) and that the tactics they employ to ensure their website ranks highly in search engine results are frequently not even unethical. However, search engines have guidelines for what constitutes appropriate promotional and marketing techniques, and anything that violates those guidelines is considered black hat. In other words, those who employ black hat tactics are not necessarily doing anything criminal; they are simply violating or bending the rules given by Google or Yahoo! about how they utilize the internet. As a result, it is appropriate to pose a few questions here. To begin, why do multibillion-dollar firms like Google and Yahoo! believe they have the authority to impose regulations on other internet users? They do not own the internet, despite the fact that their behavior, such as enforcing rules, may imply otherwise. Second, for whom are these regulations being imposed pretty arbitrarily by the search engine overlords? Naturally, the search engine companies would assert that they enforce these regulations to safeguard their users and to guarantee that they have a positive experience whenever they use their search engine. This is somewhat true, as the quality of the results returned by search engines has undoubtedly improved over the last couple of years. Having said that, there is no doubt that the primary benefactors of this enactment of laws and regulations have been the owners and shareholders of websites such as Google and Yahoo! As a result, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with employing black hat techniques throughout the site optimization process, although it is up to each individual site owner to choose what is and is not appropriate. As previously said, there are certain genuine black hat professionals whose practices and behavior border on the unlawful, but this book will not discuss those kind of tactics, simply because they are far too risky for any black hat newbie to engage in.

What I will explain, however, are the majority of the basic black hat techniques that marketers use to rank their websites in the top 10 search results, so that you understand how they do it.

The folks who control the big search engines are livid when people attempt to circumvent or violate their regulations. Thus, it is not uncommon for sites to be discovered by search engine spiders and listed in the results (a process known as 'indexing'), only to be de-listed relatively quickly if it is discovered that they are employing black hat practices.

However, as long as the site is still indexed and ranks pretty high in search engine results, it should be profitable for you, and one of your aims should be to keep the site live as long as possible by evading detection.

That is one of the secrets of a good black hat SEO strategy, which you will learn much more about in this book.

Setting up your computer properly Each day, hundreds, if not thousands, of people from all over the world decide to give online money making a try. Some of these people will succeed, but the vast majority will not, and one of the most significant contrasts between the two groups is that successful people follow a plan and are typically incredibly organized as well. Additionally, they all track any piece of information they can get their hands on about their site visitors, as this information enables them to alter and fine-tune their marketing efforts in order to increase their success. Perhaps you've never considered it, but whenever you visit a website, you leave a substantial quantity of information about your visit when you leave. If you have your own website, you may verify this for yourself by examining any built-in stats programs included with your webhost's account package. For instance, if your webhost offers a control panel via which you can administer your site, check for the 'Web/FTP Statistic' button and click it to access any of the stats applications available. I prefer to make use of Awstats:
