“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.”
DIETRICH BONHOEFFER
The universal church, with all its variances, is still the driving force in the lives of millions of people around the globe. The church is the central location for believers; it is the gathering place to celebrate the good times and mourn over the hard times. The church becomes a place of refuge for so many people throughout the world, a place where we can collectively gather, no matter what valleys or mountains we’re journeying through. The author aims to show that it’s not the building that brings people to church, nor the programs or ministries, but it is the compassion and camaraderie of other saints and believers that encourage, exhort and edify the body through life’s mountain and valley experiences. The universal church is such an amazing organism found throughout history in that, throughout the ages, with the changes of culture and the transitions and transformations of the body of believers. Yet, the gates of hell have not been able to prevail against it. In over two thousand years, the name of Jesus is still being confessed, the gospel story is still being told, and the blood has not lost its power. In biology, an organism, as defined in the Merriam-WebsterDictionary, is a complex structure of interdependent and subordinate elements whose relations and properties are largely determined by their function as a whole; whereby we see Paul describe the church as a living organism when he draws the parallel between the body of believers and our different functions, all interdependent on each other for the fulfillment of Scripture as found in Romans 12:3–8. Peter also describes the body of believers as organized stones—stones with the purpose of building up God's temple. BothPaul and Peter identify believers as an organism with different purposes, different functions, gifts and talents, but a working organism working together for the upbuilding of God's kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.
