Unlock the more straightforward side of Cloud Atlas with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, a novel consisting of six interconnected stories from different periods of history. Starting with the journal of a 19th-century lawyer, half of each story is told, only to be interrupted at a crucial moment, at which point the next story begins. The reader is taken on a whirlwind journey through the past, present and future, meeting a lovelorn composer from the interwar period, an investigative journalist with her first big scoop, a bumbling publisher trapped in a nursing home, a clone who takes up the banner of revolution, and eventually a tribesman in a post-apocalyptic world, whose story is told in full, only for the novel to cycle back through time, eventually bringing the reader back to that same 19th-century journal that opened the story. Cloud Atlas is one of David Mitchell’s best-known works, and raises powerful questions about the nature of time, identity and humanity itself.

CLOUD ATLAS

SIX OVERLAPPING STORIES IN ONE NOVEL

Genre: novelReference edition: Mitchell, D. (2014) Cloud Atlas. London: Sceptre.1stedition: 2004Themes: fate, the soul, connectivity, truth, oppression, predacity, apocalypse

Cloud Atlas is a novel which is made up of six separate but linked stories, five of them told in two parts, with the sixth, central story, in one piece. Each story begins but is interrupted by the next, during the course of which the new main character reads, watches or listens to sections of the previous story. After the sixth story, each of the others is revisited in reverse order, and each ends with the protagonist gaining access to the second half of the story that had been interrupted when their own began in the first place, so that the work ends with the same story it opened with. Cloud Atlas was well-received by critics and won several prizes, including the Richard and Judy Best Read of the Year, as well as being shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, establishing Mitchell as one of the leading British authors of the early 21st century.
