It may emerge again as an active infection, when the immune system is weak or the body is too acidic. Cold sores spread from person to person by close personal contact.

While cold sores are most contagious when they are oozing fluid, the virus can be transmitted to others even during times when you have no blisters.

The virus can cause conjunctivitis. If ulcers develop on the eye itself, it can result in vision problems and even blindness. The virus can also affect organs such as the lungs, liver and brain. Pregnant women need to see a doctor. If the virus has reached the genitals (genital herpes), the baby can be infected during birth.

A cold sore passes through several stages:

1) Itching, burning or tingling sensation around the lips for a day or two before cold sore blisters erupt.

2) Small fluid-filled blisters break out along the border where the outside edge of the lips meets the skin of the face. The blisters can also occur around the nose or on the cheeks.

3) The small blisters may merge and then burst, leaving shallow open sores that will ooze fluid and then crust over.
