Dawn Visitor

Ellie woke slowly, sound and motion pulling her out of her dreams. She realized the sound was breathing, more like panting, coming from the general area of her own neck. Her neck was warm too, and…hairy?

“Toby?” she whispered.

The movement intensified, and Ellie smiled, halfway opening her eyes. Toby did have his black and white head hanging over her neck. Her body was swaying with his hundred mile an hour wagging tail.

She turned onto her back with a groan. As soon as her face was exposed, Toby burst into joyful motion, licking every inch of her face.

“Okay, Toby, I’m awake!” Ellie said with a sleepy laugh. “Come here, sweet boy.”

She pulled her arms out from under the heavy blankets to hug a wiggly black and white bundle of energy. Toby wasn’t big, only about thirty pounds, but what he lacked in size he made up in enthusiasm. Right now he was jumping back and forth across Ellie’s chest, not wanting to miss a single kissing opportunity.

“I bet I know what you want. You want to go out and play.”

Toby let out a small yip, as if he was trying his very best not to wake anyone else. Ellie opened her eyes all the way and looked into his about an inch away. They were light brown and always seemed to be laughing. The only way to get him to be still when he was so excited was to scratch right behind his short floppy ears. Toby leaned into her fingers, turning his head this way and that so she could scratch the absolute perfect spot.

“I guess it’s about time to get up anyway. Hang on.”

When she moved to sit up, Toby jumped backward on the bed, far enough so she could throw back the covers. Ellie yawned until her jaws creaked, then shook her head. She’d been dreaming about something, something sweet and long ago.

“I was sleeping really hard, boy.” She tried to focus her eyes enough to find her slippers. “I’m moving as fast as I can.”

Toby danced on the bed, leaning around her left side, then her right. When she stood, he jumped down onto the floor. From the way the air in her bedroom felt, it was going to be cold outside. Toby let out a loud, drawn out yawn.

“I know, I’m too slow. Not going to let me get coffee first, are you?”

Toby answered by stretching his front legs out, chest near the floor, rear end up in the air, tail waving. Then he took a step forward, trailing his back legs behind him one at a time. Ellie put on her big, warm robe and yawned again. Toby danced in circles around her as she walked.
