Balance

Kandrinou sleeps like all babies except that she does not hear any noise because of her deafness.

***

In general, babies take their first steps around 12 months.

In people with Usher Syndrome type 1 ( profound deafness at birth ), It is Between 12 and 24 months. This is due to a problem in the inner ear which results in a lack of balance. Sessions with a physio can help child Usher find the balance to walk.

***

Small, the Ushers like Kandrinou try to walk while holding on to a wall or a table etc. to find the right center of gravity and memorizing the techniques for taking steps and running.

***

Between 12 and 24 months, the Ushers finally manage to walk and run but not very straight due to lack of balance.

***

As adults, Ushers don’t always walk straight.

How do you know he / she is « Usher »?

At the start of the school year, children go to school accompanied by their parents. Some go there alone. Parents don't always know if their children are USHER or not. For example, Kandrinou, his parents, Shane, don't know if Kandrinou is Usher. Kandrinou tells you what's going on with the Usher children. The supervisor greets them by signing « Hello ».

In class, Shane sits at the back of the class, Tom in the first row and Kandrinou in the middle in front of the teacher and the green board.

On the left are the windows.

During math class, the teacher explains the calculations in front of the chalkboard, "Additions". Kandrinou is in the middle ; to his right, hanging on the wall, the diagram of the skeleton and the map of the world.

Shane counts by drawing sticks that she adds up : I II III IIII IIIII etc…

Then she gives the answers without problem.

And Tom thinks, calculating with difficulty : 1+3=???.

It’s 10 o'clock, it's recess time, the light flashes on the ceiling.

The teacher tells the children that it is recess.

Shane and Tom saw the light signal, they go to the teacher to do their homework, then they leave the classroom. But not Kandrinou.

Kandrinou continues to do her calculations not realizing that the class is empty because she "is very concentrated".

The mistress is surprised to see Kandrinou still working.

The teacher approaches Kandrinou's desk and calls her.

Kandrinou raises her head and the teacher says, signing « The light is flashing, so it's recess time, go play! ».

Kandrinou replies in LSF ( Language Sign French ) : « Not seen! ».

Kandrinou gets up and leaves the classroom to go to the yard.

In the yard, children play rope, marbles, football, hopscotch…

Shane and Tom are playing soccer.

Kandrinou walks without paying attention to the marbles on the ground, nearby.

Suddenly, without doing it on purpose, Kandrinou makes the marbles waltz everywhere wondering « what is it ». Because she can't see « down ».

When jumping, the marbles make noise : « gling gling ».

One of the two comrades is furious and says to Kandrinou : « Can't you watch out for the marbles on the ground? ».

Kandrinou replies : « I'm sorry, I didn't see ».

The second comrade looks Kandrinou in the eyes angrily and does not understand his behavior.

The mistress has seen and wonders what is happening to Kandrinou. She thought to herself, « Is Kandrinou dizzy? ». Kandrinou is upset and goes to the bench to sit alone ; she doesn't understand why she didn't see the marbles ; she feels that she is not like the others.

The ball rolls towards Kandrinou, a comrade approaches to take the ball and at the same time offers Kandrinou to come and play with them but, as she does not answer, he thinks that she is « in the moon ».

Shane arrives, she asks herself questions when she sees that Kandrinou does not answer!

She approaches Kandrinou even closer and calls out to him nearby : she asks him to come and play football with them. Kandrinou jumps then smiles and accepts.

Kandrinou joins Shane and comrades with a smile.

Children play dynamic football.

Suddenly the ball flies in the air and lands on Kandrinou's head ; she is surprised because she did not see the ball pass.

Kandrinou searches for the ball all around her, unsuccessfully because her field of vision is not 180 degrees, so she cannot spot things at a glance, and it takes her time to find.

The ball is very close to her, Shane indicates the place with index finger.

Kandrinou finally spots the ball and approaches it with her foot without looking around.

She hits the ball with all her might without paying attention.

Shane puts hand over his mouth thinking « Ouch! » .

Unfortunately the ball hits the supervisor's shoulder.

He is surprised to receive a ball kick and wonders what is going on.

Kandrinou follows the ball with his gaze and jumps when he sees the ball hit the supervisor.

Shane thinks : « Oops! ».

So the supervisor picks up the ball, puts it under her arm and says « No, it's not good » ; then he asks the students « Who did this? » .

Kandrinou approaches him and replies embarrassed : « Pardon, I didn't see! ».

It's 10:30 a.m., the bell rings and the light flashes, it's the end of recess.

The teacher waves to them : « Go to class! ».

Children rush to class.

The mistress does not understand what Kandrinou is doing, nor what she is looking for.

Kandrinou looks around her looking for Shane.

Suddenly Kandrinou sees the mistress who signs : « It's time! ».

Kandrinou replies : « Oh! I did not see! ».

Kandrinou goes to the class, the teacher looks at her asking herself questions.

A few meters away, the mistress raises her arms to say to Kandrinou : « Watch out! ».

Unfortunately, Kandrinou hits something on the ground.

And finally she falls ; she tries to figure out what it is. She thought to herself : « Ah! It's a pebble! ».

The mistress remains silent, wondering what is wrong with Kandrinou.

Kandrinou gets up and rushes, quite ashamed, to enter the classroom.

In class, the teacher announces the math marks : « Kandrinou 10/10, Shane 7/10 and Tom 2/10 ».

Kandrinou smiled.

Shane feels relieved.

Tom is disappointed with her poor grade.

The mistress splits the group into two.

In the first group are Shane and Kandrinou, the teacher gives them a French homework to do in class : « Spelling : A text with mistakes to correct ».

The second group is Tom redoing her calculations with the teacher's support, to improve.

Kandrinou is doing his homework by the window. Clouds begin to arrive.

A few minutes later, more and more dark clouds are piling up, Kandrinou is struggling to read his copy.

Kandrinou turns to Shane, she is surprised to see that Shane continues to write smoothly and without being embarrassed.

Kandrinou thinks : she finds herself weird and wonders why she can't see well. So Kandrinou asks the mistress : « Can I have some light please? ».

The teacher responds : « Yes » in LSF.

The light illuminates Kandrinou's desk, she thanks the LSF teacher and is reassured.

Relieved, she can continue to do her duty.

It's noon sharp, the light is flashing, it's lunch time.

By chance, Kandrinou sees the light flashing.

Tom is all excited, he is happy to go eat. Hop! It's already out!

Kandrinou doesn't know where the cafeteria is so she has a good idea : she follows Shane without letting go.

In the dining hall, Kandrinou is still following Shane and waiting in line.

As the service approaches, Kandrinou worries when she sees that she will have to carry the tray.

« How to do? ». To be ready she memorizes the different steps : « There, the tray, the fork, the knife, the teaspoon and the glass ; A little further on, the cook serves a dish and puts it on the tray ; then you have to go to the table ».

As the service approaches, Kandrinou always panics and continues to find his way around to reassure herself.

Shane, at ease, chats with her comrade as she waits. She slides her tray, stops it in front of the cook who puts down a hot dish.

Kandrinou observes. Her turn now! The cook serves it and places the hot dish on her tray.

His mission is accomplished but not finished. Kandrinou carrie's her plate not very straight and looks for a good position to avoid dropping something.

Kandrinou, very concentrated, but without showing her difficulties, follows Shane.

A comrade of Shane invites Shane and Kandrinou to come to his table.

Kandrinou manages to put down her tray without spilling anything. Phew! She's relieved!

Tom and Shane chat with the comrade while eating.

Facing the window, Kandrinou eats while concentrating on her dish without chatting with the others.

Shane and her comrade leave the table and clear their trays. Just then, Kandrinou spots Shane leaving ; she then hurries to take her tray so she can follow her.

In front of the cart, Kandrinou observes how Shane places her tray between the rails of the cart.

It's Kandrinou's turn to put down her tray : she looks for a free row, finds one a little higher. She hoists her tray up, but she tilts the tray towards her. And poof! The glass falls on her side, then the plate. She lets go of the tray to try to grab the plate. Missed! Everything ends up on the ground ; disappointed, she looks at the debris on the ground. The supervisor asks questions when he sees Kandrinou's clumsiness.

The supervisor brings a shovel and a broom and hands them to Kandrinou. She pushes the pieces into the shovel with the brush, but there are still some left. The supervisor, surprised, helps her by showing her the pieces.

Everything is well cleaned, Kandrinou hands out the shovel and brush and thanks the supervisor.

Kandrinou wonders « Where is Shane? » she leaves the refectory and finds herself in the yard.

In the yard, Kandrinou walks on, reminding herself « Watch out for the marbles! », so she keeps her eyes directed only downwards.

But look out!! The swing seat!!! Kandrinou continues to walk looking down without seeing the swing.

Shane, at the swing, swings forward. Suddenly Shane swings backwards. Boom! The swing seat hits Kandrinou's head.

Kandrinou is shocked and wonders what it is. Because she can't see up. Shane gets off the swing right away and goes over to Kandrinou to apologize.

Kandrinou responds to Shane : « No. It's my fault, I didn't see you ».

Kandrinou has a nice bump on her forehead.

Shane offers Kandrinou a little bike ride.

Kandrinou accepts his proposal.

Shane and Kandrinou are wearing hard hats.

Kandrinou observes and tries to understand how Shane pedals the bike.

Kandrinou tries to pedal but with difficulty ; she does not hold her handlebars straight and has trouble keeping her balance.

While pedaling, Shane turns to look at Kandrinou : she is surprised to see her zigzagging.
