Deep Words and Epiphanies
Haikus and Word Magic
Albrecht Classen
University of Arizona
This collection of haiku or haikus is a continuation of my previous volume, Deep Poetic Gazes into the World (2021). I have combined taking photos of my environment with writing haikus and have thus achieved a transformation of the way of how I see my world. The title of this collection might tell the ultimate purpose of the poetic word, being keys for another dimension of our existence. This is not supposed to be a religious message; instead, the haiku proves to be a verbal or poetic platform for spiritual investigations on a personal level.

Desert gratitude,
lingering clouds on the slopes
rain gave us reprieve.
Early evening
time to ponder and reflect
the new book to read.
Patience for rainfall
late Fall miracle in green
colors reward us!
Oh, tropical fruits
heavenly delight, so sweet,
cornucopia!
Amidst old lava
sprang up so much life and love
ancient lichen too.
Enigmatic rocks
mute signals in the black sand
the waves are reading.
Wave riders gushing
watery blizzard on rocks
ocean spectacle!
Floor geometry
black and white in commotion
is there a way out?
Light and rain atop
roots draw all the nutrients
life is harmony.
Waves crashing on rocks
birds chirping all around us
monster leaves afoot.
Green building structure
veins mark the flow of water
tropical forest.
Every creature
exists purposefully, true
some defy the law.
Pacific rainfall
cold wind from the mountain tops
snow in sub-tropics.
Cold rains soak the land
the Catalinas greet them
we shiver with joy.
Saguaros bloom
when the summer sun heats up
I gaze and marvel.
Hard rusting chain links
reminders of past glory
delight for my eyes.
Devastation, so?
disruption of the cycle
volcanic moments.
Behind mother death
rests the cycle of all life
golden fern and black lava.
Life, you might wonder,
