David Foenkinos is a French author and director who was born in 1974 and studied literature at the Sorbonne (Paris). With his works published by Gallimard since 2002 (and then by other publishers, including Bloomsbury for translations of his works into English), the novelist has explored different modes of expression, such as theatre, comics and cinema. He has won many literary awards and has tackled the film adaptations of his own works (Delicacy, 2011), which have also been translated into over 15 languages.
Among his main works are Inversion de l’idiotie (2002), Les Cœurs automnes (2006), Qui se souvient de David Foenkinos? [Who Remembers David Foenkinos?] (2007), Delicacy (2009) and Lennon (2010).
First published by Gallimard in 2009, Delicacy is David Foenkinos’ eighth novel. With nearly 100,000 copies printed, the work was enthusiastically received by the public and received ten literary prizes, including the Prix Conversation and the Prix des Dunes. It describes a woman’s romantic relationships with three different men, who are all captivated by her: firstly a perfect relationship (François), then a nonreciprocal relationship (Charles), and finally a rather puzzling affair (Markus).
Characterised by its light nature, this work is made up of 117 very short chapters, interspersed with short annotations, extracts from songs or various remarks. It is also unique in that it features footnotes, which give additional information about the story.
The novel has no divisions other than its 117 chapters. For the purposes of concision and comprehension, we have decided to divide the text into three main sections.
François approaches Natalie in the street. He does not usually do this, but he feels that Natalie is ‘the one’. She agrees to have a drink with him, and they get to know each other in a bar where, quite unexpectedly, she orders exactly the drink that François hoped she would: an apricot juice, the “perfect” choice according to the young man.
