CHAPTER 1

“Hey, can you hear me?”

I opened my eyes and saw that I was laying on the ground. A stunning brunette with long hair was kneeling beside me.

“I know you, don’t I…” she said. “Lauren, is that right?”

I gathered some strength and managed to sit up. “Yeah…”

“What happened? Can you get up?” she asked, helping me to my feet. My head felt a little fuzzy, but otherwise I was okay. We were standing in the cold street. I tried to recall what happened.

That night, my housemate Karen dragged me into a night club. We danced a lot and it was fun, until she got drunk. I went to the bathroom and when I came out, I saw that she was standing at the bar, kissing some long-haired guy, whose hand was moving liberally under her skirt. There was no point for me to stay. I sent Karen a text to say I went home and left the club.

“I needed some fresh air, so I decided to walk to a bus stop… Then, I noticed someone following me…”

“Oh my God!” the brunette gasped, her big green eyes filling up with horror.

“It was a man, I don’t know him. I heard footsteps behind me. I walked faster and then ran. He ran after me and then tried to grab me…”

“Oh, no! Did he hurt you? We need to call the police!”

“No, I’m okay. I don’t remember what happened next, but I think somebody scared him away. I… I must have fainted…”

I looked around and spotted my clutch bag laying in the grass. My phone and money were still inside, untouched.

“Let’s go,” the girl said. “I’ll call my driver and give you a lift home. You must be mad, walking the streets alone in the middle of the night!” She put her arm around me and we went back, towards the nightclub.

*******

A little while later, a black car pulled up outside of my house.

“Here you are… Next time, don’t be crazy and call a taxi. You could’ve been seriously hurt, or even worse!” the girl said, giving me a hug.

“Thanks, Anna! Take care, I’ll see you soon!”

I opened the front door and run upstairs into my room. It was almost three o’clock in the morning. I drew the curtains and went to bed, leaving a small bedside light on. I could not bear the thought of being in the dark, alone. After all, what if it will be back… No, not the man who tried to attack me, but the vicious creature that took him… The one that cracked his skull and ripped his limbs clean from his body.

I was laying under the covers, terrified by every little noise and when I fell asleep, my mind was re-playing horrific events of the past a few hours in my dreams, over and over again…

I left the club and walked along the deserted road, lit by yellow street lamps. I heard heavy steps behind me. I walked faster. I ran. I heard him chasing me, getting closer and closer... I felt someone’s meaty fingers grabbing me around the waist. I screamed, but there was nobody to help. Somehow, I managed to break free. But then... there was silence. I slowed down and looked back. Street lights were going off, one by one. I saw the man who chased me. He stood in the middle of the road, pointing at something in the dark. I saw green glowing eyes, black scaly wings… The man gave out a muffled short scream, as the hellish creature grabbed him into razor sharp claws… Then, there was darkness.
