Unlock the more straightforward side of Doctor Faustus with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. The play’s title character is a scholar with a seemingly unquenchable thirst for knowledge, which leads him to make a pact with the devil, brokered by the cunning Mephistopheles. The pact means that he will have 24 years of unlimited power and access to necromancy, but once this time is up, he will die and be condemned to Hell for all eternity. Doctor Faustus is among Marlowe’s most famous works; he is also known for his plays Tamburlaine and Edward II, and his poem Hero and Leander. He was one of the most important playwrights of the early modern era, and had an important influence on William Shakespeare.

CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE

ENGLISH PLAYWRIGHT

Born in Canterbury in 1564.Died in Deptford, London on 30 May 1593.Notable works:Tamburlaine (1587), playThe Jew of Malta (c. 1589), playEdward II (1592), play

Aside from attracting attention for maybe being William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe is primarily known for his dramatic death. On 30 May 1593, in a house just south of the River Thames, Ingram Frizer stabbed Marlowe through the eye. This brawl accordingly follows the narrative that Marlowe was, at one time, a secret government spy with a penchant for violence and, on top of that, a reputation for atheism and homosexuality. Many critics have argued that, more than any other contemporary playwright, Marlowe’s autobiographical experiences seep into his work: in Edward II with its homosexual tension and Doctor Faustus with its challenging atheistic representation of devils. But in his work, many have argued that Marlowe is one of England’s foremost early modern playwrights, and with his adoption of iambic pentameter (it was Ben Jonson who coined the term “Marlowe’s mighty line”) and his innovative use of the new outdoor playhouses he can very much be seen as Shakespeare’s precursor.

DOCTOR FAUSTUS

ONE OF THE MOST SUPERNATURAL AND DEVILISH TRAGEDIES OF THE EARLY MODERN ERA

Genre: playReference edition: O’Connor, J. ed. (2003) Doctor Faustus. Essex: Longman.1stedition: c. 1588-1592Themes: morality, devils, magic, art, sin, Christianity

Doctor Faustus is one of the Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe’s most popular and famous plays. It is based on a German legend about the eponymous Doctor Faustus, who sells his soul to Lucifer in return for 24 years of unparalleled power and access to necromancy. At the end of these 24 years he must be damned to Hell for eternity. The play primarily deals not only with Faustus’ Promethean ambition, but also with the inevitability of his fate and the psychological struggle he faces when he begins to face up to the prospect of eternal damnation: he knows exactly when he will die. The play garnered much critical attention at the time of its first performance, mostly due to its representation of devils onstage. Many see it as a precursor to Shakespeare – not least because Marlowe is seen as one of the key innovators of iambic pentameter, in which most of Shakespeare’s work is written.
