This book, written by Walter Isaacson in 2023, tells the story of Elon Musk, a super-smart and famous inventor and businessman. Isaacson has written biographies about other amazing people like Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein, and now he's taking a close look at Elon Musk.
The book dives into Elon's life to help us understand the person behind the companies he created, like Tesla, which makes electric cars, and SpaceX, which launches rockets into space. We learn about Elon's big dreams for the future, like sending people to Mars, and the challenges he faces along the way. Through this book, readers get a closer look at both Musk's personal life and his professional pursuits, giving a comprehensive understanding of this captivating individual.
Elon Musk's rough childhood in South Africa: author Walter Isaacson describes a brutal wilderness camp Elon attended at 12, where counselors encouraged bullying and fights over scarce food and water.
Isaacson paints a picture of a violent 1980s South Africa. He recounts a disturbing incident where young Elon and his brother encountered a murdered person on their way to an anti-apartheid concert.
School wasn't much better for Elon. He was bullied relentlessly, even beaten so badly once that he was hospitalized. Shockingly, his father, Errol, blamed Elon for provoking the attack.
Both Elon and his brother remember Errol as a dishonest, unpredictable, and abusive man. Isaacson suggests this abuse deeply affected Elon. Despite trying to distance himself from his father's influence, Elon sometimes displayed similar unpredictable behavior as an adult. Isaacson calls this Elon's "demon mode," a state where he becomes cold, intense, and emotionally detached.
The author suggests Elon's upbringing and experiences might have shaped him into a risk-taker who thrives on drama and crisis, similar to other successful entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs. Isaacson even hints that a calmer, kinder Elon might not have achieved the same level of success or innovation.
In the first chapter, Isaacson introduces Elon Musk's family history, starting with his grandparents. Elon's maternal grandparents, Joshua and Winnifred Haldeman, were described as adventurous risk-takers. Joshua, a member of the Social Credit Party, moved the family from Canada to South Africa due to his beliefs about government control.
Errol Musk, Elon's father, had a tumultuous upbringing. His father, Walter, was a cryptographer in World War II, and his mother, Cora, left Walter after the war, taking the children with her. Errol later ventured into the emerald mining industry in Zambia, drawn by its lack of regulation.
Isaacson details Errol's marriage to Maye Haldeman, Elon's mother, which was marked by drama. Despite a rocky relationship, they eventually married. However, their honeymoon was overshadowed by conflict, with Errol's behavior causing strain. It was during this time that Maye discovered she was pregnant with Elon.
This chapter explores Elon Musk's early life and the challenges he faced. Elon was born in 1971. By age three, his intellectual curiosity was evident, prompting his mother, Maye, to enroll him in nursery school. However, Elon's daydreams often landed him in trouble with teachers who mistook his absentmindedness for a lack of intelligence. Some even questioned his cognitive abilities.
Socially, Elon struggled to connect with others. He often came across as insensitive, bluntly calling classmates "stupid." Isaacson suggests Elon might have Asperger's syndrome, a condition that can affect social interaction and communication. While Elon never received a formal diagnosis, his mother believes he falls on the autism spectrum. Isaacson links this to Elon's difficulty understanding emotions and his seeming indifference to others' opinions.
Life at home wasn't easy either. Maye and Errol divorced when Elon was eight. Maye, a strong and independent woman, juggled multiple jobs to support her family. The author describes her as a no-nonsense parent who instilled a strong work ethic in her children. However, Maye's search for love led her into another abusive relationship. This new romance ended abruptly when Maye discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her, fathering another child with a friend.
This chapter follows Elon's life in the 1980s, when he decided to move in with his dad, Errol, at the age of 10. It turns out that this wasn't the best choice. Elon, as an adult, even said he later regretted it. Apparently, Errol convinced Elon by making him feel bad, saying things like he was lonely and that it wasn't fair that Elon's mom had all the kids. A few years later, Errol even used the same trick on Elon's brother, Kimbal, to get him to move in too.
Errol wasn't exactly the picture-perfect dad. He could be unpredictable and impulsive, and he didn't always take care of them properly. There was even a time when he took Elon and Kimbal all the way to Hong Kong on a trip, but then left them alone in their hotel room for two whole days!
Despite Errol's shortcomings, Elon did have some fun times. He spent a lot of time with his cousins, Peter and Russ. These boys weren't afraid to get rough, and sometimes they'd even get into physical fights when they were mad. Out of all the cousins, Elon was known for being the most competitive and fearless one.
Things got tough for Elon at school too. He was bullied, beaten up by other kids, and even hospitalized. His father blamed him for it. Because of this, Errol decided to move him to a different private school.
Even with the challenges, Elon always had a curious mind. As a kid, he loved experimenting with rockets and building things that could explode (not something serious). When he wasn't busy with science experiments, he'd escape into the world of books. He especially loved comics and rereading his dad's encyclopedias over and over. There was even one book that fascinated him—it talked about all sorts of inventions that might exist someday in the future. Maybe that book even sparked some ideas in young Elon's mind.
