I glanced over in surprise, wondering what the girl was doing. I’d been to many formal events over the past decade, as a guest as well as a server, so I knew that interrupting was a huge faux pas. Servers were supposed to be furniture, necessary yet unobtrusive. Apparently, no one had thought to impart that bit of knowledge to the girl. I would have thought a formal corporate event would have shown more class than that.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

This may be the start of something amazing!

Chapter One

As I approached Garnet’s office, I noticed the door ajar. That wasn’t normal.

Realizing something big must be going down for Garnet to be so remiss, I tiptoed closer to listen.

I needn’t have bothered...I had no trouble hearing the conversation...the one-sided conversation.

“She doesn’t need a damn bodyguard,” Garnet was saying...more like yelling. “You had a different assignment and shouldn’t have been anywhere near New York. Stop following her around like a dog in heat and get your act together or I swear I’ll fire your sorry ass...I don’t care how the hell good you are.”

Silence.

“Did you hear me? I said...”

“He heard you, but he does not care,” Condor replied, his amusement obvious. “You and I both know you are bluffing. If Grunt goes, Fresco and I follow...and your operations in Europe will continue to deteriorate.”

I hadn’t realized Condor was there, but I was relieved. From what I surmised of Grunt, he wouldn’t have even attempted to defend himself...he would have simply left.

And I didn’t want him to leave.

“Damn it, Condor, I can’t have him...”

“Have we failed at any task you have set before us?”

“Well, no,” Garnet spluttered, “but that’s not...”

“Then I fail to see the problem. Now, if you will excuse us, I have arrangements to make for the Op tomorrow night and then we have a murderous bastard to catch.”

I quickly moved around the corner next to Garnet’s office, peering out from the shadows to catch a glimpse of the man for whom I was fast developing an obsession. No matter how much I berated myself for being an idiot, I couldn’t seem to help it.

As Grunt followed Condor and Fresco out of the office, he paused. I held my breath, watching his back, wondering what I’d done to give myself away. Slowly he turned and looked right at me, a half smile curving his incredibly sexy lips. From that distance—a good twenty feet minimum—I was fairly certain that he couldn’t see me, hidden as I was in the shadows, but somehow he knew I was there.

After a slight nod in my direction, he turned and followed the others down the hall and out of sight around the corner.

My breath left my body in a loud whoosh as my lungs violently protested the need for oxygen. It took me all of fifteen minutes of deep breathing exercises before I felt I could face Garnet.

“So kind of you to finally show up to work,” Garnet said without taking his eyes from the computer screen.

“Hello to you, too,” I said with a grin as I planted myself in one of the chairs facing his desk.

“Just so you know you have three of my best agents planning to go AWOL after tomorrow night searching for your old boyfriend Reggie.”

“Did you tell them?” I demanded, sitting straight up in the chair, anxiety no doubt written across my face.

“Those assholes had the nerve to threaten me with bodily harm if I didn’t. Can you believe that? Three against one...”

“So you told them,” I slumped back down in defeat.

“I told them that Reggie killed your family, but I didn’t get specific about the details.”

“Why not?”

“It’s bad enough they know about your family—the three of them were practically smoldering—I wasn’t about to add fuel to the fire by telling them about...er...the other things.”

“Fuel to the fire...?”

“Right now it’s all fresh and new and, in their anger, they want to find Reggie and make him pay, but eventually either that anger will cool down and they’ll come back to work or they’ll find him and then come back to work. If, however, I give them the rest of the story, I suspect at least one of them will never quit searching.”

“That wouldn’t be such a bad thing...in fact, I’ll go so far as to say it would be a good thing.”

“Thank you so much for your concern about my staffing problem. I am overwhelmed by your heartfelt response.”

“You’re very welcome.”

Frowning, Garnet glanced over at me, no doubt wondering at the sincerity in my tone.

“Have you suddenly lost your sense of sarcasm? You know how I meant that.”

“Yes, but I chose to take the words at face value since I’ve done you and the FBI a huge favor.”

“Oh really...do tell...”

“Do tell...? Seriously...?”

“What the hell has gotten into you?”

“I have no idea what you mean.”

“You’re...different...relaxed...almost like you’re...happy...” Garnet said grimacing in distaste at the last word.

“Maybe I’m just pleased with myself. After all, I found an assassin and a serial killer all in one night and you have your best agents on it...or you will after their Op tomorrow night. What’s not to be happy about?”

“You know something,” he accused. “Stop with the ambiguity and spit it out already.”
