While at Princeton, he was taught and influenced by Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Morrison. Hamid studied at Harvard Law School until 1997, and now makes a living through consultancy and writing. He moved to London in 2001, and became a dual citizen of the United Kingdom in 2006. He has written essays and journalistic pieces for publications including The Guardian and The New York Times. Hamid has lived in Lahore with his wife Zahra and their daughter Dina since 2009, and regularly travels between New York, London, and various European countries. He is known for his experimental techniques: How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is written in the second person, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2007, is written as a monologue addressed to the reader.
