Exploring Leadership (3rd edition) defines leadership as, “a relational and ethical process of people together attempting to accomplish positive change.” When leadership is approached in this way, working with others to accomplish change, everyone can be a leader. Starting with that assumption creates our opportunity as leadership educators to help students explore their own strengths, experiences, and style in order to engage with others in a way that feels authentic and true to them. Exploring Leadership addresses these issues through the following sections:
The purpose of the Facilitation and Activity Guide is to provide active learning strategies for organizing a course or workshop series around Exploring Leadership (3rd edition). Each chapter in Exploring Leadership is addressed here through a set of one-hour Active Learning Modules. The Active Learning Modules are identified by a number and letter, with the number corresponding to the chapter of Exploring Leadership it supports. In addition, each chapter has a corresponding unit in the Exploring Leadership: Student Workbook.
The Active Learning Modules have been designed by some of the best leadership educators in higher education today, based on their particular areas of expertise and the classroom exercises they have personally found to be effective with their students. We have thoroughly enjoyed learning from them.
The Active Learning Modules are effective in either curricular or co-curricular settings and can be structured to build on each other or stand alone, depending on your purposes. The Exploring Leadership: Student Workbook, which provides worksheets and discussion questions that align with many of these modules, is a useful companion to this publication for either setting.
We hope you enjoy exploring new ways to actively engage your students with Exploring Leadership.

As much as we enjoy our work, teaching leadership presents unique challenges. Leadership is a concept that is elusive. There are no clear-cut rules or formulas. Depending on their developmental readiness, many students come to us expecting clearly defined steps to leadership excellence. They can become frustrated by our efforts to help them learn to navigate ambiguity, recognize the influence of context, and have more complex consideration of relationships, organizations, and the process of influencing change.
