"Reverend Powers, the church is falling apart and that river can swallow us whole at anytime - we have to go!"
The heated trustee board meeting seemed to go on for hours as some tried to hold on to their old ways while others recognized the importance of moving on. River Banks Church of the Living God was a pillar in that small Southern community of Powersville. Regardless of the troubles that the town faced, RCLG - as it was called - remained.
Reverend Powers could see the look of anguish on the face of Deacon Johns. Deacon Richard Johns had worshipped at RCLG since the very beginning back in 1971. He grew up in that church and his parents were amongst the original four who started that church out of their home.
"Deacon Johns, I understand your concerns - but relocating the church can have catastrophic results! This church is the rock of this community and people depend on us - we're needed here!"
Deacon Johns continued; "I understand that Pastor, but that piece of land on the other side of the river is so affordable! It's cheap! That old factory closed up years ago and that land is just going to waste. They'll practically pay us to move over there!"
Reverend Powers stood and walked to the window and looked at the calm river that purred gently nearby. He could remember fishing there with his Dad. He was baptized there and he baptized others there as well. He started this church at the young age of 18 and he was their Pastor for the last 38 years.
He could not give up all that he knew to be true. This is where RCLG began and this is where they'd stay. He had made up his mind.
"Ricky, why do you hate this place so much? What's wrong with this place and where we are right now?"
