ENGLISH NOVELIST AND POET
Born in Dorset, England in 1840.Died in Dorset in 1928.Notable works:The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), novelTess of the D’Urbervilles (1891), novelJude the Obscure (1895), novelThomas Hardy was a prolific Victorian novelist and poet. He was born in Dorset and grew up on its heathland. This rural upbringing provided the inspiration for the fictional region of Wessex, the setting of his novels, which detail the lives of its inhabitants. Hardy originally trained as an architect, an experience explored in his partly autobiographical final novel Jude the Obscure. On becoming a writer, Hardy started with poetry before turning to novel writing. His exploration of human relations and sexuality was considered highly controversial as it challenged Victorian ideas of morality. The critical condemnation of his novels heralded Hardy’s return to poetry with the collection Wessex Poems in 1898. However, Hardy is primarily remembered for his novels, which explore societal issues of class, marriage and sexuality that remain relevant today. Hardy’s writing is considered to be ahead of its time, and it spans the transition between the late Victorian and Modernist periods.
