Born in London in 1963, Erika Leonard is a British author, better known under the pseudonym E.L. James. She was catapulted to fame by the Fifty Shades trilogy: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

Initially, the author self-published fanfiction (stories written by fans to extend or change a novel, movie or any other media product they enjoy) on the internet, inspired by the Twilight saga (2005-2010) by Stephanie Meyer. Thereafter, her story led to the creation of the Fifty Shades of Grey novel.

The press categorizes the trilogy as ‘mommy porn’ or pornographic literature for ‘housewives’ under fifty. The novel was so successful that in 2012, Time magazine placed Erika Leonard on its annual list of the one hundred most influential people in the world.

Summary

Fifty Shades of Grey

Anastasia Rose Steele, a young literature student, interviews Christian Grey (a tycoon of the Grey Enterprises Holdings company) for the university newspaper about the graduation ceremony where he is giving a speech. During their discussion, Christian addresses the problems of world hunger and his plans to end poverty. At first, Ana takes him for a cold and pretentious manipulator, but she later realizes what he is really like and understands that he too experienced hunger before being adopted by the Greys, which explains why his project is so close to his heart. She feels troubled by this man that she finds both arrogant and attractive.

Christian is also under Ana’s charm and even goes so far as to investigate her life in order to see her again. This bring him to the hardware store Clayton’s after finding out that she works there after classes. It is here that he learns of the disappointment of Ana’s best friend, Kate, editor of the student newspaper, about not having original photos to illustrate the article. To see Ana again, Grey agrees to a photo shoot, and then invites the young woman out for a drink. A few hours after their date, she receives an original edition of Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy (British writer, 1840-1928) which is worth a fortune.

To celebrate the success of her last year of college, Ana goes out for a few drinks. When drunk, she calls Christian to ask him why he sent her such an extravagant gift. Angry and worried about her drunkenness, he authoritatively announces that he is coming to get her and he takes her to his place. The next day, he walks her home and kisses her. That evening, he takes her by helicopter to his apartment in Seattle, where he presents her with two contracts; one involving a confidentiality agreement regarding the business and private affairs of Grey, the other defining the rules of their relationship. These relate to personal hygiene, lifestyle, dress code, fidelity requirements, etc. He also shows her his playroom containing a collection of BDSM instruments and accessories: female submission is his pleasure. If Ana wants to be with him, she must accept the terms of the agreement, meaning she must permanently obey all of his orders. In the relationship contract, the phrase “The Dominant accepts the Submissive as his, to own, control, dominate and discipline during the Term” is written. During their time together, she discovers that he cannot bear her to touch certain parts of his chest where he has scars.
