It happens on a bright Monday morning. Witnesses will tell reporters later the sun suddenly disappeared from the sky and there was a brilliant flash of lighting, followed by booming thunder and a shadow in the light. Four Alpha male doctors go to the site of the crash, as if compelled by a supernatural impulse, unaware that their lives are about to change forever.

~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
They climb out to the surface in silence, Leo getting to the top first due to the lack of added weight. He gives John a hand up and frees the woman from his back. The coat almost falls from her shoulders and John adjusts the coat quickly so that is covers the woman's frail, weakened body more appropriately. Her head lolls forward onto his chest, and her knees give up beneath her. He holds her steady with both hands on her arms.
Ivan feels something in him spike, unpleasant and bitter. It takes but a moment for him to realize what he feels is jealousy. John steadies her and rubs the heat trapped in the material into her arms to get the circulation going better. Remy's jacket is long enough that it comes almost to her knees. Even with the sun shining down brightly at them and the exercise they've gotten, Ivan is starting to feel the chill from the wind.
The distant sound of an ambulance's sirens are getting closer and closer. "Let's get her out of here before somebody else shows up," Remy says decidedly.
"Wait, what?" John stops and turns, barely managing to keep the woman upright. "The ambulance is nearly here. We should get her to the hospital."
Remy deadpans. "Do you honestly think they're going to keep her in the hospital once they've seen her wings?"
Leo shakes his head. "Anomalies are sent to research centres, John. She'll never see the light of day again." It is comforting to know that he is not the only one who feels an overwhelming sense of protectiveness towards her.
"She needs to be checked out," John insists.
"Not at the hospital," says Remy, his tone leaving no room for arguments.
"Not at the hospital," Leo agrees.
John turns to Ivan with wide, hopeful eyes, as if thinking he would be on his side. Ivan shakes his head. "I agree with them, John. The hospital is not the best place to take her."
"Where then?" he asks.
Instead of an answer, Remy counters with a question. To John, he asks, "Did she say anything to you?" Earlier, Remy and Ivan both saw her whispering something in his ear on the way up the crater, but he was too far to hear.
"I'm not sure if it's English," he says. "But I get the feeling that she's afraid."
Ivan feels a stab in his chest at the statement. "We're not going to hurt you," he says to the trembling young woman. "Let's get her into the car first."
"And then what?" asks John, ever the one for following rules to a T.
"And then we'll drive her to my clinic."
Ivan didn't mean to growl at Remy. It just sorts of happen, bubbling from his chest and escaping his throat before he could do anything to stop it. His upper lip pulls back, and he is snarling at the older man.
Chapter 1: Descent
The first people to notice something is wrong is a group of doctors having breakfast together during one of their rare moments of freedom. Ivan is comfortable, sinking into the feather-soft couch as he sips on a cup of coffee that is neither too bitter nor too sweet. Yet, he can sense something wrong. It's the same feeling he gets when he has to pull triple shifts in the hospital and right before he's supposed to clock out, he's called back in for an emergency.
"What're you reading, John? Your eyes look like they're about to fall out." Leo dusts imaginary specks of dust from his pants and sends John a soul-crushing glare. Leo doesn't approve of people who bury their noses in their phones during their breaks.
John is none-the-wiser. "There's a breakthrough with the Omega Research in the Shifter Medical Facility in Denmark," he says. "Says here they think they're isolated the virus responsible for the Omega Extinction." When his statement is greeted by interested silence, he continues, "They found out that the virus is still present in minute amounts in the air and that's why there hasn't been any Omegas in the past fifty-three years."
It's a sore subject for most of them. While most of them weren't even born yet, they know the Omega Extinction of Twenty Fifty-Five has caused a massive change in the ecosystem of the world. Whereas there used to be enough omegas for every Alpha in the world, now, there are none. In the old days, a group of Alphas would form a pack. The stronger the alphas, the better chances of them obtaining the perfect Omega. Without an Omega in the nest, the pack is not complete, and the Alpha pack is left without heirs, without children and without that sense of contentment that Betas are able to find with their Beta counterparts. Being an Alpha used to be a point of pride. Now, it is both a blessing and a curse.
Alphas are gifted to be physically and intellectually gifted. As such, they also tend to be more confident and arrogant, making it so that they are usually unable to interact with other Alphas without conflict. Having an Omega tones down that level of aggression.
Omegas are the perfect companions for Alpha males, their biology allowing them to produce pheromones that can soothe their Alphas. In a society where packs couldn't form due to the complete lack of Omegas, it almost crumbled completely.
Alphas are constantly at each other's throats, unable to come to peaceful resolutions without Omegas in their midst to soothe them. The added tragedy of the loss of Omegas in their packs only aggravates the situation. Grieving Alphas look for every reason to lash out and fight. Many Alphas were lost during those years.
Betas, those who are neither predisposed to be dominant nor submissive, end up taking the roles that Omegas used to and turned into necessary mediators to calm the panic. Thankfully, since Betas make up the majority of society, civilization does not crumble, but the numbers of Alphas have greatly diminished since then.
It is an effort, to change the entire system of society, but one that is slowly improving. Thankfully, Betas are still able to reproduce, and human race does not die out due to the lack of Omegas in their midst.
The research into why omegas have all died out in the first place is an ongoing one, though the more years pass without a single Omega being born, the less hope there is that Omegas are going to reappear at all.
"Is it present in lethal amounts?" asks Leo. Leo is the most serious of them and looks more like a professional bodybuilder than the best surgeon in the hospital that he is. He also has the foulest mood. It is a good day if nobody bursts into tears in his presence.
"Doesn't say," John responds, finally looking up from his phone. He turns off the screen, evidently deciding there is nothing else worth sharing. Most of the news about Omegas that they read about is just news about the history and possible causes of their extinction. Even the oldest person in their little gang, Remy, is only thirty-nine and is too young to have any sort of experience with Omegas.
None of them are currently attached and though their excuse is that they're too busy with work, it is the same for most Alphas. Betas pair up with Betas and give birth to either Alpha or Beta children, though there have been cases of Beta giving birth to Omega children more than fifty years ago. Alphas pair up with Omegas. Without Omegas in the world, most Alphas end up on their own. It is a sad truth.
Ivan notices Remy staring at the sky and pulls out his phone to check the weather forecast. He doesn't see anything about a storm, but the dreary clouds overhead look ready to drop a blizzard down on their heads.
"We're not on a hurricane warning, are we?" asks Leo.
He shakes his head. "Not the last I heard." He looks up at the darkened sky. He could've sworn it was bright just a minute ago. Now, it looks like night has descended on them without warning.
"Certainly looks like a storm." John murmurs, looking around. The automatic lights have turned on and illuminated the day down the street. The other patrons of the cafe are also looking up at the sky, frowning at the sudden change of weather. Several of them gasps when the wind picks up suddenly, blowing tissue and paper cups from the tables.
"Looks like the apocalypse is coming. You have your bunker set up for all of us, John?" Remy asks in jest, poking fun at John's love for movies in that genre.
"Ha-ha, very funny-" A flash of lightning disrupts John's response and he nearly falls from his chair at the booming thunder that cracks immediately after. "Fuck you, Remy!" he cries out, blaming him for being startled so violently.
Ivan can't help but chuckle a little at his response, but the truth is that he is beginning to worry as well. Sudden changes of weather is never a good sign and though it has been years since they have had a natural disaster, it is not impossible that a hurricane is about to occur again.
It is Leo who remains the most level-headed of the group of Alphas. "Perhaps it would be safer if we headed inside."
"You're right," he says, standing up with the intention of heading into the cafe. Having a roof over their heads is certainly a good idea. Ivan starts to follow.
"Let's go," Remy says, using his authoritative voice that makes Ivan stop dead in his tracks. Remy isn't following behind them. Instead, he turns towards the parking lot and starts to head towards the car.
Ivan and John stands in between the two men, suddenly unsure of who to follow. On one hand, the cafe seems safer in case the sky does decide to fall on them. On the other hand, if they're late to the office, they have to pull longer shifts as punishments. Ivan truly can't decide which is worse. There is a peculiar look on Remy's face as he gazes at the focal point of the lightning storm that tells Ivan that he doesn't intend to get back to work.
Before he can ask where Remy's headed towards, a current of white-hot electricity fires down from the sky and strikes so close to them that Ivan can feel the hair on his arm rise. Only, this is not a lightning strike because it is not going away, continuing to linger, a beam of light from the heavens that defies laws of physics. Ivan thinks that if he reaches out, he can grasp it with his bare hand, but he knows it is just an optical illusion, that the light is further than it appears. From the looks of where the ends of it cuts out, he guesses that it is near the park. Or perhaps even in it.
A solid mass descends from the pulsating light like a comet falling from the sky, speeding so fast that the resulting crash sends a shockwave through the air.
The uncomfortable buzzing in his head intensifies. Ivan knows that if he doesn't get close enough to the site of the crash, if he isn't there first, something terrible is going to happen.
Again, Leo is the fastest to break the stunned stupor that they're in. "Let's go," he says. Remy is already moving, heading towards the car that they've carpooled here in.
"This isn't a good idea," Ivan hears John say to Leo, but he is moving with them. They are moving hurriedly now, with the sort of confidence that only first responders have. If they're lucky, the comet has not struck anyone on its way down.
"Stay if you want," Leo snaps and John is climbing into the seat.
There is no traffic as they drive towards the crater, seeing as civilians are going the other day. The smell of burnt grass and ash fills their nose the moment they step out of the car.
Like some sort of cosmic joke, the walls around the park is untouched except for occasional debris hanging from the top of the walls. Everything inside has been burned to crisp and the crags from the impact of whatever it was that fell from the sky left an odd static in the air.
"This is a really bad idea," John says, shifting his weight between each foot. He is also the first to make his way down the crater, his footing is firm and sure.
Ivan is more careful with his descent. Unlike John, he doesn't spend his free time hiking mountains and breaking rock-climbing records. Leo finds a sturdy branch from a fallen tree that is strong enough to double as a walking aid and makes his way down ahead of Ivan. Remy is the last to follow. The unevenly decimated earth doesn't crumble beneath their feet and the closer they are to the centre of the crater, the harder it is to see.
