The Pep Talk

Kay Montanaro caught herself before she rolled her eyes. She would not spoil a rare outing with her friend. Since Sylvia Albertson got married and moved to the West Coast, they had kept in touch through phone calls for more than two years. Not nearly good enough.

Kay admired Sylvia’s strength in the face of all the shit that life had thrown her way. She often sought her advice, except about the issue they were currently discussing. Not because Sylvia wasn’t equipped to help, but because Kay was too embarrassed to discuss it. Besides, Syl didn’t face the same problem at all.

She wished Syl would change the subject. Fat chance. She was like a dog with a juicy steak when she thought something needed fixing. And she had decided Kay’s sex life could use a push. Or a thrust, pun intended.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Kay flinched at the outburst and her friend whispered, “Two years without getting laid? No way!”

Relieved that her friend lowered her voice, she retorted, “Way! Could you just drop it?”

The last thing she wanted was for patrons in the restaurant to overhear them. A fancy, new hotspot in town was not the place to discuss her sex life—or lack thereof. At lunchtime, chances of running into associates or clients were too damn high.

“How are things with Hank?” Kay inquired.

Their server interrupted them, setting two glass bowls filled with diced strawberries, crumbled angel food cake, and fluffy whipped cream on the table.

“Looks sinfully delicious.” The way Sylvia’s hazel eyes took in the hunk and the tray he carried made Kay wonder if her friend meant the dessert or the eye candy.

“Appreciate it.” He winked at Sylvia and left.

Chaz, the name stitched on his uniform, flirted with Sylvia like most men did. That had been her thing since they were teens. Men turned flirty when they were around Sylvia. It didn’t matter if she flirted back or not.

That was one of the reasons Kay didn’t feel comfortable discussing her sex life. She was aware of her own limitations. She owned mirrors, although she spent little time staring at them lately. When she did, she saw a thirty-four-year-old, overworked, cute woman with shoulder-length, curly red hair, big green eyes, and a butt that used to be much smaller.

Sylvia, on the other hand, had reached forty without losing her top-model build. Her sharp intellect and smart-ass quip had improved with age, making her heart-shaped, wrinkle-free face shine with an alluring expression. She was the epitome of a guy magnet. The kind other women avoided because they were eclipsed when Sylvia was around.

Kay had no problem with that. She never felt threatened by her friend’s sex appeal. It just seemed as though Syl would not be able to relate to Kay’s feelings about the current state of her love life. She might do so on an intellectual level, but there were aspects of it, such as the insecurities and self-doubt, that Kay would bet her friend had never experienced. Kay hadn’t done so until the reflection in the mirror didn’t correspond to her self-image.

As they dug into the yummy last course, storing the extra calories, Sylvia’s attitude worried Kay. Her friend avoiding eye contact usually meant her brain was in overdrive. Kay was aware things had gone sour between Syl and her hubby. They had touched on the subject when Syl told Kay she was heading to Chicago, then promised to discuss it face-to-face. She hoped her friend’s mind was engaged in how to describe what was going on in her life. But, once her friend processed the shocking information about Kay’s sex life, she charged again.

“We will change this. I promise. We’ll end that drought as ‘dry spell’ doesn’t begin to describe your status.”

Their shared laughter caused a couple of heads to turn their way, but they shrugged the attention off. One of the reasons they had remained good friends and loved each other to pieces was their ability to make light of any bad situation and laugh out loud at their problems. Laughing improved their mental health.

“I appreciate the offer, but there’s nothing you can do about it. I’m used to it now, so I don’t care either way. Besides, you’ve just arrived for a five-day vacation. Let’s make the most of what little time we have to hang out.”

Sylvia kept talking. “How do you mean ‘you’re used to it’?” Kay realized she had shocked her friend even more. “You shouldn’t settle! Damn it, you can’t give up on sex!”

Kay’s discomfort increased, even though Sylvia meant well. She offered one last reason for having given up on any hope of developing a love life or just having sex any time soon.

“It’s too much work. And, to be honest, I don’t know that I like it that much.” Kay shrugged, then blushed at her friend’s slack-jawed expression.

A long silence followed her revelation. She had made Sylvia speechless. Again. That was never a good sign.

“Nonsense.” Sylvia shook her head, dismissing Kay’s argument. Stubbornness was one of her strongest traits. “No woman should give up on sex. I mean, nobody should give up on sex. Oh, I know! It’s been so long since you last got laid you forgot how good it was.”

“Or it’s just that I’ve never had that much fun to begin with.” Kay’s dismissive bitter laughter didn’t fool her or her friend.

“Stop it. This is bull and you know it. You’ve had a couple of bad experiences, I’ll give you that, but not all guys are rotten.”

Kay shook her head but didn’t bite the bait. Her goal was to drop the subject; therefore, she chose not to engage. That didn’t stop Sylvia.

“Picture this. You go to this fancy dinner, right? When you get there, you find this beautiful table set up with plates piled high with mouth-watering food and fruits of the season. You grab a shiny red apple and as you sink your teeth into it, you find out it’s made of wax. Do you give up on eating fruit altogether? I don’t think so! You just need to be able to tell the difference between real and phony.”

Sylvia’s colorful analogies were another of her trademarks. The banquet image would stick to Kay like flies on honey. “I guess not.”

“Exactly. Why should you give up on all men after eating a couple of bad ones?”

Kay didn’t need the wink to get the double entendre. She chose to ignore it. “Those were more complex situations, though. Christian was a control freak who thought I was his property. You know I don’t follow orders that well.”

Sylvia nodded and smiled at Kay’s understatement. Kay was totally incapable of submitting to anyone. Period.

“Jay…” Kay averted Sylvia’s stare as her voice broke off, the memories more disgusting than hurting.

“Shit! Forget I mentioned that nut job. Hope he’s happy in his little fantasy world, unable to create real connections with real people. What happened in those two cases could happen to anyone.”

Kay doubted that and blamed herself for having missed the red flags. Twice. “How could I’ve been so blind to all those signs?”

The Intervention

Sylvia shook her head with vehemence. “It doesn’t matter. You’re one of the smartest people I know. The thing is, people often shut their brains off when their hearts take control. Been there, done that, multiple times.”

Kay’s heart stuttered. She’d been selfish dumping that shit on her friend’s head. “I’m so sorry. You’ve got real issues we should be discussing here, not my imaginary ones. You told me you wanted to come to Chicago to get things sorted out in your head, away from the source of your problems.”

“Nice try,” Sylvia countered. “We’ll get to my stuff. Your issues aren’t fantasy, my dear friend.” She paused for a heartbeat before adding with a wink, “Besides, I’d rather focus on someone else’s crap than have to deal with my own.”

Kay chuckled. “Typical.”

“So, shunning men from your life will only make it harder to bear. Unless you’ve found out you’re a lesbian. Is that it? I can fix you up with my sister-in-law, if you want.”
