Hans Peter Richter was a German writer and psychosociologist born in Cologne in 1925 (the same year as the children whose story he tells in Friedrich). During his childhood, he witnessed Nazi propaganda, Hitler’s accession to power and his dictatorship. Although Friedrich is not autobiographical, the author drew on his own experience when writing it.

As a sociologist, he was also interested in work organisation and academic life. He wrote many works, including a study on children’s literature, and co-wrote radio and television programmes.

Friedrich was published in 1963. The novel recounts the lives of two children in Germany in the 1930s. They are friends and live in the same building. One is the narrator, the other is Friedrich, a Jewish boy. When Hitler comes to power in Germany in 1933, Friedrich’s life, and that of millions of other Jews, will be turned upside down.

The story is told by Friedrich’s friend, who, powerless, witnesses the bullying, injustice and violence of which the Jewish community is victim.
