Overview

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, published in 2022 by Matthew Perry, the actor you know best as Chandler Bing from the hit sitcom Friends, kicks off his memoir with a blunt statement: despite his fame and success, he almost didn't survive. This chapter sets the stage for a journey through Perry's life, from a childhood shaped by his parents' divorce to his rise to stardom on Friends.

Perry doesn't shy away from the dark side of his story. He hints at a "Big Terrible Thing" that nearly took his life, foreshadowing the memoir's central theme: his battle with addiction. But before he dives into that struggle, he promises to share his experiences growing up, finding success as a young tennis player, and eventually landing the role that would make him a household name.

The tone he sets is honest and sometimes laced with dark humor, a signature style that will likely carry through the memoir. This opening chapter lets you know you're in for a no-holds-barred look at Perry's life, the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

Foreword

In the opening of Matthew Perry's memoir, his former Friends co-star Lisa Kudrow steps in to introduce the book. She acknowledges Perry's sharp wit and intelligence, then dives into a situation that used to make her feel awkward. Reporters would often ask her about Perry's well-being, hinting at his well-known struggles with addiction.

Kudrow's discomfort stemmed from two reasons. First, Perry kept the specifics of his addiction private, so she wasn't fully informed. But more importantly, she felt it wasn't her place to share his story. This book, Kudrow emphasizes, gives Perry the platform to speak for himself. He'll be revealing the complete story of his battle with addiction and his path to recovery, entirely in his own words.

Prologue

The author starts by telling a scary story about a time in his life when things got really bad. He was 49 years old and in a rehab center in California, trying to get off drugs and alcohol. Quitting a medicine called Xanax caused him to be constipated for ten days, with horrible pain in his stomach. His friend Erin, who helped him out a lot, knew something was wrong and insisted on taking him to the hospital. The people at the rehab center actually tried to stop them, thinking he just wanted more drugs.

Things got even worse at the hospital. The author fell unconscious and threw up into a tube that was supposed to help him breathe, which gave him pneumonia. On top of that, his internal organ was failing. He had a very long surgery, and his family was told there was almost no chance he would survive. He stayed in a coma for six weeks after that, with his mom, sisters, and Erin by his side the whole time. When he finally woke up, he realized how close he came to death because of his addiction. It was a real wake-up call. He also found out the doctors had to do a temporary colostomy bag, and there was still some damage they couldn't fix. It took him five whole months to finally get out of the hospital.

The author says that even though he was rich and famous, it didn't fix his problems. He always felt kind of empty inside, and all the success in the world couldn't make him happy if he was using drugs or alcohol. He mainly wrote his memoir to help other people who are struggling with addiction and let them know they're not alone.

Chapter 1

The View

Perry, who is 52, lives in a house by the sea in a place called Pacific Palisades near Los Angeles. Even though he really wants a partner, he's always been single because he's afraid of being rejected. He talks about his childhood in his book.

Perry's mom, Suzanne, and dad, John, met in 1967 at a beauty contest in Canada. Suzanne was super pretty, and John was a singer. They fell in love and in 1969, Suzanne had him during a snowstorm. Matthew had trouble sleeping, so the doctor gave him barbiturate to help him sleep.

When Perry was nine months old, his parents split up. His dad moved to California to become an actor, leaving Perry and his mom with Suzanne's parents. Perry met his dad for the first time when he was five. He flew alone from Montreal to Los Angeles, feeling scared until he saw the city lights below, knowing he was almost with his dad.

Perry's mom worked a lot as the press secretary for Canada's Prime Minister. She was famous for being pretty and good at her job. Perry felt left out because his mom was always working. He started being funny to get her attention. His mom's job made her travel a lot, and every time he saw a plane while she was away, he wondered if she was on it.

Growing up, Perry often felt alone, finding solace in playing tennis. His childhood was marked by frequent moves, with him and his mom changing houses a lot. Although his dad called every Sunday, Perry saw him more on TV than in real life. He remembers feeling puzzled when he saw his dad in commercials for Old Spice Aftershave, alongside a younger actor playing his son. Every birthday, he wished his parents would get back together.
