I rang the doorbell of my house. ketaki opened the door.

She asked," Have you fallen somewhere. ?"Your clothes are looking so dirty."

I said, "Yes." She looked worried.

I further said, "Don't worry. I am fine.No injury.

I inquired, "Where is Lovey.'

"She is sleeping."

"I will have a bath," I said and went to to the bathroom.

That year was 1995. Then I was working as a customs officer at the Chennai international airport. That was an unforgettable day, but I have forgotten the date. That had been a tough night at the Chennai airport. Normally flights operated at night. That night hundreds of Haj returnees also landed. By 6 am day shift officers arrived and I came out of the airport.

I picked up my scooter from the parking area and started for my residence. I  was very much tired and drove slowly. After three km from the airport, I had to take the right turn to go to my residence at Nanganallur.

I could never recollect the moment when I fell down with the scooter. A few guys lifted me and took me to a roadside clinic. I had no external injury so I just sat there for a few minutes and came to my residence.

I told my wife about the incident. She was concerned. I told her not to worry as I was fine.

As was my practice after a nightshift, I got fresh, had breakfast, and slept.

When I awoke in the afternoon and tried to sit, I got severe giddiness and fell back on the bed. I was unable to move my head. Any movement of the head would give me severe giddiness.

I told my wife to call the doctor. She called a neighborly doctor. He came and examined me and prescribed a tablet. He also advised me to go to some hospital for a proper check-up.

I called one of my local friends and told him about the problem. He took me to a decent private hospital. Somebody told me once in a while the then Chief Minister of TN used to visit that hospital for a check-up. This was a certificate of merit for the place. It boosted the morale of the patients of that hospital.

The Physician, after preliminary examination, advised me to get myself admitted there for a thorough examination, which was necessary as I had some internal problems. I agreed.

My friend helped me with the formality of filling forms. I was allotted a room. After my admission hospital staff took charge of me and wheelchaired me to my room. The hospital staff was very sweet and professional. They did all the tests including CT- scan of head and MRI of the back. Three specialist doctors visited me. Smiling and courteous nurses provided great comfort. Only mineral water was supplied for drinking. Food was prescribed was a dietician.

I was in awe of the hospital and staff. Then after two days, I was handed over a bill of 12000/_. I requested the main doctor to discharge me. He told me after seeing all my reports he would advise. The afternoon he visited me along with a nurse, who carried my file having all the detail. He casually declared, "You have problems with c1,c2, and L1 to l4. I mean to say you have got cervical spondylitis and lumbar disc prolapse."
