Grey

Another point of view on Ana and Christian’s relationship

Genre: novelReference edition: James, E.L. (2015) Grey. London: Arrow Books.First edition: 2015Themes: romantic relationship, domination, submission, sexuality, rewriting

Riding on the success of the Fifty Shades trilogy, Grey was published in 2015 in response to demand from fans who wanted to know the feelings of the character Christian during the stages of his relationship with Ana. The novel therefore retells the story of the first volume, but this time focuses on the male point of view.

Christian Grey is a billionaire businessman who perfectly controls the details of his existence, at least until he meets young Anastasia Steele in his office. A relationship then begins between them that very quickly takes an intimate turn. While Christian offers Ana a contract that will make him her dominant, as he always does with all his conquests, he nevertheless realises that with her, nothing is playing out the way it did with his previous submissives…

Summary

A tumultuous relationship

In Seattle, Christian Grey has built a more than thriving company which employs many thousands of people and earns him a very good living, but outside his professional success, his life is almost empty.

One day in early May 2011, a journalism student who is to interview him for her university’s newspaper sends her housemate, Anastasia Steele, in her place, as she is ill. Christian very quickly fantasises about the young girl and pursues her. Anastasia, known as Ana, initially refuses his advances, but she calls him one night when she is drunk. Christian comes to her and saves her from the aggression of an overly-zealous friend, then brings her to his suite at the hotel.
