THE NATIVES LOVED TO TELL tall tales. There were the usual stories of sea monsters in local lakes, evil spirits who haunted certain spots. As a girl growing up, Shae had heard them all. Usually they were told around a campfire, in the dead of night.
They were an escape from her everyday life, experiences that seemed so extraordinary and fantastic. When she grew up, the young woman looked upon those stories as a time of remembered excitement.
Her secretary position wasn’t glamorous and certainly didn’t give her a feeling of satisfaction, but it paid the bills.
At least she made enough to live on her own, unlike many people her own age. And while not old, to her twenty-seven was no longer the epitome of youth. But she found dating difficult. She’d known everyone her own age since they were in kindergarten. It was a little hard to picture them as adults when she still remembered them as snot-nosed kids.
What that added up to was a very scarce social life. Every now and then she visited her parents and such, but really, she didn’t get out much. Her life was boring, plain and simple.
That was probably why, when the stories began to spread in the local gossip chain about strange lights, she was intrigued. An article even appeared the local newspaper. Everyone who told the story described a strange light that seemed to emanate from underneath the ground.
The light was never in the same place. Some people told of it appearing underneath a lake, another in a deep ravine. There were even more places all over. As far as anyone could tell, there was no rhyme or reason to the appearances.
Still, it gave the sleepy town something new to talk about, and Shae eagerly listened to any news she could hear. Luckily, her job gave her the opportunity to hear all sorts of things from the customers who came in.
A couple of older women were sitting in the chairs, awaiting their turn. The shorter of the two was the first to speak to the other. “Did you hear? There was another sighting of those strange lights again last night.”
The skinny one next to her leaned forward eagerly. “Oh? Where was this was?”
Sitting back, comfortable that her audience was rapt, she gave a sly smile. “Well, I hear it was somewhere up near that old mine on the hill. You know, that one with the strange history.”
Nodding, her partner urged her to continue with a wave of her hand. Trying to appear as busy as possible, Shae kept both ears fixed on the conversation, completely engrossed on the topic. It was a lot more interesting than going through the old wills that liberally covered her desk.
Leaning forward conspiratorially, she went on. “They say the light was so bright you could see the shaft for miles around.”
“That’s much brighter than any of the others,” the skinny woman interjected, eyes alight with the delight of sharing some of her own knowledge.
The smaller woman huffed. “Yeah. But,” she held up one finger menacingly, “they say that that place isn’t normal. Strange things have been known to happen around there.”
At that moment the attorney came out of his office, beckoning to the shorter of the two. Her story told, she quickly stood up and departed, leaving her two audience members with a mystery on their minds.
THE SHAFT WAS QUITE OLD. What little of the town’s early history was written down spoke of the hole as being there before men even lived in the valley below.
