If Only It Were True is an original, touching love story about a young architect and the soul of a young woman who is in a coma. This unusual supernatural adventure is also a reflection on love, life, death and the modern world’s reluctance to embrace spirituality, which in turn encourages the reader to think more deeply about the meaning of existence.

The novel’s strengths lie in the transcendental nature of its story (meaning that it takes place outside the realm of the concrete), its realistic description of the medical world and American society, and its interwoven passages of narrative, believable dialogue and letters. In 2005, the American director, producer and scriptwriter Mark Waters (born in 1964) adapted the novel for the cinema under the title Just Like Heaven.

Summary

Lauren Kline, a young medical resident in an American hospital, is severely injured in a car crash during the summer of 1996. Although she is pronounced dead by the two paramedics who arrive on the scene, she later starts breathing again, stunning the police officers tasked with transporting her body.

She is taken to the hospital, where her boss Fernstein says that she is in a coma and has been left permanently brain-dead. However, he agrees to operate on her when some of the other doctors insist, with one of them telling him that “behind Lauren’s open eyes he had sensed her struggling, refusing to go under” (p. 20). In fact, Lauren’s soul has somehow been separated from her body, and is watching the scene but is powerless to do anything or communicate with anyone.
