An Italian from Florence, Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a writer and poet who was involved in the political life of his native city.
The author of love poems (La Vita Nuova), Dante also wrote works about various topics, such as language (De Vulgari Eloquentia) and politics (Monarchia). However, he is best known for having written the Divine Comedy. He dedicated his life to this long epic poem, which is divided into three canticas, which correspond to the Christian conception of the afterlife: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
Influenced by his reflections about man and society, Dante differs from his contemporaries in that he depicts his individuality, his own self, which was a great literary innovation at the time.
The first cantica of the Divine Comedy, Inferno was made public around 1314 and was widely diffused, as shown by the manuscripts through which we know the text. In turn, this cantica is divided into 34 cantos, the first of which is an introductory canto explaining why he travels first through Hell, then Purgatory, and then Paradise.
Led by the Latin poet Virgil, Dante explores Hell. Hell is structured in nine Circles which join the center of the earth where Lucifer, the fallen angel, is to be found. The poet meets the damned, who undergo a punishment proportional to the sins they committed on earth. The more Dante advances towards the last Circle, the more severe the sins.
