Book Description

Army Sargent Rhea Griffin has a bug problem. Three years ago, alien insects the size of cars landed on earth and began eating every scrap of metal they could find. They drove humanity out of their cities and the collateral damage wiped out most major population centers. Now Rhea and their squad survive in the woods, cutting out a place for humans in a Roach-occupied planet.

Their Captain has a new recon mission: approach the Roach nest that has been built on top of a local Navy base and determine what the bugs are doing now that all the metal has been carved out of the town. And what Rhea finds makes everyone nervous.

What if the Roaches are here for more than just metal?

Infestation

A short story

Rhea braced their back against a crumbling cement barrier, one of those freeway-dividers that was wider on the bottom than the top. They had been placed in a line along the road some time before the apocalypse and now the weathered material was starting to fall apart. The rebar inside bore evidence of roach chewing. Hopefully they had other sources of food today.

Several bodies to the right, Rhea's squad leader, Captain Rogers, motioned the group forward. Silently, and single file, they moved in a low crouch behind the cement dividers. Rhea rested their left hand on Hoft's back and felt O'Roker's hand on their own. It kept the squad tight and in direct communication. No one really knew how sensitive a roach's hearing was and Rhea was happy not to test it.

They were spooked enough coming this close to their hive...colony...thing. This property used to be a military base, surrounded by iron fencing and filled to the brim with humvees, hyundais, and helicopters. Now it was a cement graveyard. The roaches had stripped the place bare of metals, from the fencing to the frigate, then made themselves at home in what used to be the commissary. Their nest bulged out of the roof like a black mushroom, looming three or four stories tall—now the biggest thing in the area—and recently it had started to grow.

That's why Rhea and their squad were now sneaking up on it from the base's formerly gated entrance. Major Brook wanted to know why the nest was growing and if their little corner of humanity was at risk. Rhea was pretty sure they could answer that question without getting any closer. The roaches had come en masse three years ago and decimated the entire planet in their search for metals. Was the threat to humanity really in question?

But she wasn't in charge, and Captain Rogers had volunteered them for the assignment, so here they were, eyeing the nest and hoping their recon went smoothly. As in: no enemy contact. At all. Giant bugs were not their preferred alien encounter. Rhea shuddered, trying to shake off the creepy-crawly thoughts like a too-warm blanket. Behind her, O'Rorke patted her back like he sympathized. Rhea shot him a look over their shoulder and gagged. He grinned back.

The droning buzz of a large insect made the entire squad freeze in place against the cement barrier wall. Hands moved automatically to the rifles each person held, fingers straight on the triggers and muzzles down, but eyes up at the sky.

Sergent Law saw it first. She twisted in place from one knee to the other and aimed her rifle. Rhea and the rest of their squad followed the line and took aim. A roach flew over the trees that used to back the base's fence line and headed straight for the nest. It was built like a dragonfly: head, thorax, four wings, but it was the size of a skateboard and faster than lightning. They weren't much of a threat on their own, they had no means of attacking, but they were the roach's advance scouts and long-distance communication network. They could turn on a dime, dart through narrow gaps, and if it spotted the squad, they would be overrun with roaches in a heartbeat.
