Tentacle Awareness

By Tami Veldura

Gwen dipped her fingers into the vast space around her ship, searching for something that had been left behind. She found a hole, a tear in fabric with ragged, unraveling edges. On the other side, her fingers touched a different corner of space. With care, she dragged the ship closer, then all at once they fell through the wyrmhole and arrived in a new star system.

Gwen took a deep, clarifying breath, shook her body back into awareness, and urged her mental sense of space to fade. Jumping the ship and its contents from one system to another was her job, but it was also something of an art. The task pulled at her mind, and tried to drag her body with it, and only decades of practice let Gwen peal herself out of the space-sense so easily.

She stood on the deck of the Heron, reacquainting herself with local reality. Space was immeasurably vast, but the pilot deck of the Heron was a tiny five by five meters, more than half consumed by a pair of well-worn seats before the flight computer and it's screens.

Charlie sat in the pilot chair on the right. Her short hair fell into her eyes as she worked, she kept flicking her head to the side to clear it. While Gwen could leap them through space, Charlie was in charge of the local flight, and she worked through the standard arrival report to the space station in this system while navigating away from the wyrmhole one-handed.

The wyrmholes, and by extension jumpers like Gwen, were the only way to travel faster than light, but the wymholes were only as stable as the most recent dragon migration. Arrival reports like theirs helped keep an eye on the system and smart pilots knew better than to try jumping through evaporating tears in the galaxy. A ship could end up anywhere.

Gwen eased herself into the co-pilot chair, the old leather so worn and soft it no longer creaked. The space sense finally dissipated from her mind, leaving Gwen feeling somehow smaller, but more stable.

Charlie navigated the Heron out of the major traffic lanes and parked in a line of similarly sized ships. When it came to jumping things other than herself, Gwen and the other jumpers had an upper limit on mass, which made long-distance trade a pricy and lucrative business. It also made ships the size of the Heron as common as dust. Once Charlie was sure the ship was stationary, she pulled a lever on the side of her chair that allowed it to swing and face Gwen where it locked again.

"Ok," Charlie said, resuming earlier conversation, "but what if your lover is an alien. Is that automatically kinky?"

Gwen huffed a laugh. Jumping the ship took a lot out of her, so they would sit here for an hour or so to let her recover. It left them with a lot of time to chat, and her business partner loved to chat. Gwen considered. "I don't think so. Not if you're just… doing missionary position. I'd say your alien lover needs to have tentacles or you're both into ice cubes or something."

"But if the alien lover has tentacles, that wouldn't be kinky for them. They grew up with tentacles." Charlie wiggled her fingers.

"Maybe they think your hands with five fingers are kinky," Gwen said.

Charlie suddenly looked at her own fingers in curiosity. "Ohhh, that would be weird."

"Besides, I think things are only called kinky if they're taboo in some way. If you've got an alien lover, your taboo line is already way different than most people." Gwen let her head rest on the chair but turned her body to face Charlie.

"So alien kink is like… super kinky."

"Are you into alien tentacles, C?"

"Can't knock it till I try it." Charlie winked.
