The Importance of List Building

Believe me when I say this—building a list is the most important thing you can do for your business. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your business is, it’s so important to have a way to connect with and contact your audience directly.

There’s a lot of talk and interest in building up Twitter followers and Facebook likes these days. Sometimes, it’s easy to lose sight of your true goals and believe that these are the be-all, end-all in business.

Really, those things should be a means to an end. You should have Twitter followers as a way of connecting with others in your audience and funneling people to your email list. You should work to get Facebook likes as a way of being seen in your niche, building relationships, and... funneling people to your email list.

You should be building your list with everything you do online. When you sell products, build your list. When you write articles, build your list. When you blog, build your list.

Build your list through opt-in forms on blog posts, sign ups to get freebie offers on squeeze pages, and through automated (double opt-in) customer lists.

If I haven’t stressed it enough yet—build a list with absolutely everything you do in your business.

Why List Building Is Really So Important

At this point I’ve mentioned over and over that you should be building a list with just about every action you take in your business. But, why is it so important?

There are several reasons—some include:

Frequent, easy contact with customers, readers, and those interested in what you have to offer

Relationship building

Future-proofing

Scalability

Passive income

Multiple points of income

Let’s go over each of these points in turn.

Frequent, Easy Contact with List Members

It’s really exciting when someone, anyone reads your content, comments on your blog, sees your sales page, checks you out on social media, or buys a product of yours.

It’s great... but what if they forget about you and never take another action again?

What if they only ever buy that ONE product from you because you fall off their radar?

What if they love your blog post but forget about you because they have a million other great blog posts they love?

What if Facebook changes their algorithm so that person who “liked” your page never sees another one of your posts again?

Then, it’s not quite so rosy. It’s as if your readers and customers are slipping through your fingers. You need a way to connect with them and keep up with them. You need a way to stay at the top of their mind.

Getting them on an email list is the best way to do that. Get that Facebook liker on your email list and who cares if Facebook changes their algorithms? Get that blog reader on your email list and let them know when you have new posts... and new promotions. Get that customer on your list and gain a customer for life.

People are more likely to buy from those they know, like, and trust. People are more likely to buy when they’ve been reminded to do so more than once.

Relationship Building

If someone trusts you and already likes what you have to say, they’ll be a lot more likely to buy from you. That sort of thing happens over time... once you have a relationship.

How do you get that relationship? It’s hard to build it if you only every have fleeting contact with a reader or customer.

Get them on your list and it’s a whole new ballgame. When you have someone on your email list, you can send them helpful information. You can answer their questions one on one. You can share things that are going on in your life.

Email is simply more intimate and primed for relationship building. You have to use your list in the right way to make this happen, of course, but it can pay off big time when you do.

Future Proofing

None of us know if Facebook will always be the powerhouse it is today. The same goes for other social media sites. None of us know if Google will rank our sites and blogs well tomorrow or if they’ll fall away to oblivion.

How do you future-proof your business? That’s easy... you build an email list.

Your list is yours. As long as you comply with email marketing rules, you’re free to do what you want with your list. You can email them when you want, port your list to a new autoresponder company, promote what you want, when you want, and so on.

Put your business in your own hands by building an email list and making that a main focus, if not the main focus, of your business.

Scalability

It’s important to have an email list if you want to scale your business up. You’re so busy that it’s more essential than ever before to automate where you can (in the form of a list building funnel and autoresponders, in this case) and pay attention to what really works in your business.

Build a targeted email list of thousands of those desperate for answers and willing to spend money in your niche and I can all but guarantee your success. Having an email list allows you to scale up because you can focus on what’s important and always get your offers and promotions in front of extremely targeted eyeballs.

Passive Income

Having an email list can also help you achieve the dream of passive income. You can set up a squeeze page and make use of traffic methods that will work for you day and night. You can pay for this traffic, write articles, create video, or whatever works for you.

You can then create a freebie offer that you give away on your squeeze page. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 am, people will get that freebie automatically if they sign up for your list.

You can write a series of autoresponder emails that inform and delight your audience. You can write emails that promote products of yours and products you’re promoting as an affiliate.

Sure, you’ll have to check in and maintain your list, but much of your list building and income generation can happen on autopilot if you set yourself up the right way. This is great for product creators, affiliates, etc.

Multiple Points of Income

Having an email list helps you develop multiple points or streams of income. You can earn as an affiliate or product creator. You can strike up great Joint venture deals... people are a lot more likely to work with you if you have a great, responsive email list.

It doesn’t matter what your main form of income is right now, having a list gives you options. And in a business where things are constantly changing and you have to keep up, adapt, and make sure your eggs aren’t all in one basket, email marketing is key.

Build Your List!

Build your list and you’ll build your freedom. And I mean that sincerely. Make list building a main focus of your business and you can succeed in business beyond your wildest dreams.

What Will You Sell to Your List?

Remember that it's a good idea to have a great plan to follow before you get started in email marketing—but, it’s never too late. Hopefully, your plan so far also includes what you're going to sell to people once they’re on your list.

If you don't sell something or promote something, then you're not going to make money. That might seem like a silly thing to point out, but it's incredible how many marketers and people who want to start their own small business don't have anything out there to sell at all.

Your list is interested in what you have to offer... you just have to take the plunge and offer it. They want information from you but they also want advice on what to buy. And because they’ll have come to really like you and what you have to offer, they'll want to buy your products specifically.

And that's what I recommend. I recommend that you become the person they turn to for advice on what to purchase within your niche. You don’t want to promote every product you possibly could as an affiliate. Handpick the ones you know your list will benefit from the most.

You want your list members to turn to you whenever they're trying to decide if they should buy something or not. Your opinion should become invaluable to them.

Don't be afraid to create your own products as well—in fact, I highly recommend that you do. Whether you're selling physical products or info products, it's just a natural part of the process because your audience will want to buy from you. You’ll have such a great relationship with them over time that some of them will buy just about everything you have to offer before they even read the sales page.

And don't forget that one of the best ways to build your list is to have your own products that affiliates promote for you – and all their buyers get added to your list. It’s a fantastic list building strategy.

Depending on your business, promoting products as an affiliate that you highly recommend and being open and honest about those products with your audience is a great strategy. Don’t be afraid to point out the bad along with the good—people will respect you for it.

In addition to deciding what you'll sell to your list, think about how you'll sell it to your list. Maybe you’ll write a blog post to talk about the products you’re promoting as an affiliate. Perhaps you’ll write your own sales pages for your products. Maybe you’ll link straight to an offer you’re promoting as an affiliate.

You’re going to enjoy selling things to your list over time because you’ll know exactly what they need and want. If you approach this the right way, you’ll truly be helping people by promoting to them.

Building a targeted niche list makes everything in marketing so much easier—including increasing your business income. It's one thing to sell to people cold who don't know you. But your list does know you. They’ll come to know you even better over time. You'll be shocked, amazed, and delighted once you realize that the conversion rates from people who open your emails and go on to buy has skyrocketed because they trust you so much.

You might sell some of these things via autoresponder emails. These are those emails that you set up ahead of time and that go out to everyone depending on when they signed up. So these promotions should be more evergreen products of yours or things you promote as an affiliates.

Autoresponder emails are great because they’re pretty set it and forget it. You could be spending the day lounging at the beach, not lifting a finger, and these emails will go out automatically and make sales for you.

But, there will be times when you want to send out broadcast emails instead that go out to everyone at once. Maybe you have a special offer, new discount, a new product, a thought you want to share, and so on.

As part of this, think about how often you'll sell to your list. Will you send a sales email every day? Or maybe you’ll send a sales email a few times a week. Or perhaps you'll send mostly informative emails with just a few sales emails sprinkled in between. It depends on you, your goals, your niche, and what your audience will respond to.

Think about the money when you think about your possibilities for promotion. Remember that if these people don't buy from you, they will buy from someone else. Don't feel bad about sending sales emails to your list.

I know many email marketers and business owners who do feel bad, especially when they’re first starting out. But you’re in business for a reason and that's to make sales. Just remember that you’re promoting things and creating things you know will benefit your audience. So, you shouldn't feel bad about selling to them because you’re promoting something that will truly benefit them.

At the same time, remember not to treat people like an ATM machine. Don't bombard them with sales messages without giving any value in return. Don't promote something just because the affiliate bonuses are nice if you don't truly believe it will help your audience.

Always put your audience first. Realize that you are a marketer and you do need to get buy buttons out there. If it's benefiting your audience, even if it’s just some members of your audience, then go ahead and send that sales email. Your relationship will be such that they will trust you and your conversion rates should be high.

Why You Should Pay for Your Autoresponder Service

Email marketing is one of the most important parts of your business. Hopefully, you understand its importance and that to be successful with email marketing, you need a great autoresponder service.

Unfortunately, I’ve heard more than once that some people (mainly new to having their own business) would prefer the option to go with a free autoresponder service. And I have to be honest with you – there are free options out there. There are scripts you can install on your website, for example, that allow you to manage your own autoresponder service.

That is a disastrous idea.

Just because something is free doesn’t mean it’s good. And we do live in a great time where there are lots of great, free tools you can use for your business. An email autoresponder service simply is not one of those things.

For something so important, you need good, reliable tools. You need one of the great autoresponder services out there.

Email marketing is a huge part of your business so you really don’t want to leave it up to chance. And honestly, paying for a good autoresponder service is such a small investment that it’s kind of silly to take a chance on something free. Scripts can fail and it takes a lot of resources to run your own autoresponder service or rely on something free (there are almost always strings attached).

The great news is that a small investment in an autoresponder service will really pay off. It will give you great security in your business to go with a reliable autoresponder service.

What You Need to Know about Paid Autoresponder Services

You should know that the very best paid autoresponder services have high quality tools that they consistently update. You won’t have to worry about things being out of date or not having what you need to build and manage your list effectively. Good autoresponder services have these and are constantly working to make them better.

Good, paid autoresponder companies also have a reputation with email services like Gmail. This is so important because the fact that names like Aweber and GetResponse are more trusted than others (such as the free ones or ones you host yourself) can help you get more email opens and more sales.

This next point is important especially if you’re new to email marketing. Good, solid autoresponder companies have staff who can help you and answer your questions. It can be daunting at first, even though the companies try to make their tools as easy to use as possible.

These paid services help you manage and maintain your list. They make it easy to easily add and delete new subscribers. You can even easily import subscribers from other services you’ve used... this is especially important if you’ve already made the mistake of going with a free option at first.
