Jan’s Doctor

The bus

Did you see him? Who Janet replied off handedly her eyes affixed on her book. Didn’t you feel that tingle when his hand brushed ours as he passed by Sister Jan asked? Who repeating herself Janet replied; as she raised her eyes from the book in their left hand and looked over at her sister’s face. Him; Using their right hand Jan pointed out of the bus window that young man isn’t he handsome.

Her twin looked down at a man walking away from them at a hurried pace just as their bus began to pull away from the curb. You’re so obvious sister Janet accused don’t think for a second I didn’t notice you flirting. Me flirting, was not Jan said indignantly. Oh sister, I suppose it was just a knee jerk when spreading our thighs and pulling our dress up past our knees putting our body on display, he probably thinks we’re prostitutes.

You have such a vivid imagination Janet have you been reading my book? No way, sister I wouldn’t be caught dead reading that filth. For your information sister it was the wind that swept my, our skirt when the door opened Jan replied. It was the wind which swept my dress up Janet mocked? In my defense Jan replied I smoothed it down as quickly as I could. You still caused it by parting your thighs Jan, I was paying attention you know, so don’t deny it sister.

Janet continued to berate Jan; even if we were separated twins I’d still know what you did but we aren’t and I know. It’s stuffy on this bus and I was just shifting to relieve an itch, Jan replied again defending herself. Of course blame it on an itch. Well it was I just couldn’t stand it anymore, surely you didn’t expect me to stand up and scratch our ass. Besides the wind caught my dress just when I twisted, can’t you please just drop it Janet.

Likely excuse but better than no excuse at all I suppose Janet replied. You sound just like mother Janet and with that Jan fell silent. Jan had control of their legs and felt more below the waist than did her sister Janet. Janet had lied she felt it too, a tingling sensation as the strangers hand brushed theirs ever so slightly. She like her twin sister often fantasizes about having a normal relationship with a man but in her heart of hearts; Janet never imagined it could ever be.

That unfortunately was their cross to bear, she’d never admit to her sister that Janet had felt anything; other than the accidental brushing of a strangers hand against theirs, it was so hot on the bus, Janet wanted to rise from the seat and scratch what needed scratching but after all they were in public. Scolding Jan again; it’s those dirty books you’re reading sister; they’re warping your mind, always a dreamer, even when we were toddler’s sister.

Don’t you remember how we were ridiculed and taunted when we were yet at the orphanage? He was probably there too, the ring leader no doubt; Janet added. He certainly was not, Jan said in the stranger’s defense; I’d recognize him and he isn’t one of them. I swear sister you need to stop reading that filthy literature; Janet scolded they’re making you believe normal and impossible things but it can’t and never will sister, why can’t you ever admit it Jan?

Admit what sister Jan asked? The world thinks we’re freaks and we are Janet said. Shut up Janet Jan whispered as low as she could. Its true Janet replied whispering back to Jan; we’re freaks, all things being equal, if it was a fair world we’d have been still-born and the world would not have had to put up with us. Look at the way people stare at us sister Janet added.

Jan looked around the bus, some people were staring but others were more discrete. They’re only staring because you’ve raised your voice just then and made a spectacle with your accusations sister. I do wish you’d be more discreet yourself Janet. Especially when we are in public you’ve embarrassed me so Jan added. Janet spoke under her breath why get excited over something she and her sister would never experience.

Then conceding you’re probably right sister but just for an instant, just an instant mind you. I had this crazy notion of us being normal, of having what everyone else has Janet, a normal relationship, a normal boyfriend. Yeah right; Janet replied a tear started to run down her cheek. He’s got to be like all the rest, probably thinks we’re freaks, just feeling sorry for us, no normal guy could ever like or even love a girl with two heads.

Without hope and dreams sister we may as well have died at birth instead of being raised at the orphanage. Our real mother who ever she was, was probably afraid of us sister, that’s why she abandoned us Janet said and regretting right away she’d said that hurtful thing to her sister again. Ignoring her sister’s unkind last remark, then seeing a tear running down her sister’s cheek only confirmed to Jan her sister had lied about feeling nothing.

Jan raised their arm to wipe away her own tear then reached over to her sister’s right cheek and wiped away the tear on Janet’s cheek. In her heart of hearts Janet could never imagine anything so far fetched as being normal; no for them that could never be. The accidental brushing of a strangers hand on a crowded bus, well that at least was normal. With two nervous systems plus their being twins in one body both girls had super senses.

The slightest touch by another body on theirs was like a static electric shock only heightened. Who knew what a real relationship, the caress or passion would be like; the thought was a little frightening actually Janet thought to herself. However silly Janet could not deny to herself that she’d absolutely experienced the same heightened tingling sensation as Jan had and Jan absolutely knew Janet was lying about not feeling it.

She like her twin sister had once had a normal imagination along time ago. Her sister still fantasized about having a normal relationship but Janet could never let her self be so gullible. This is the way it is, Janet thought to herself. She’d never admit to her sister she’d felt anything other than the accidental brushing of a strangers hand against their hand. Scolding Jan again; it’s those damned dirty books you’re reading sister.

I’ve a good mind to tell daddy to tell Charles not to buy them for you. You’d find some other way to get them, I’m certain of that. Again sister you need to stop reading that filthy literature, its warping your mind; you should spend more time concentrating on our studies. We’ve taken our finals what more should I study Jan replied. Why you wanted to take that extra course on human behavior when we’ve already been graded on it?

Raising her eyes from the page and looking sternly at Jan’s face, speaking too loudly. Jan was certain that passengers sitting closer could hear her sister speaking, that literature is making you believe impossible things. Kids may have been mean to us when we were kids but now that we’re all grown up living in the real world! Why do you always have to spoil my fantasies sister?

Because sister as pretty as we are and as smart as we are we ain’t exactly winning awards for being normal and we aren’t likely to ever be! As long as we have two heads attached to one body people will always feel sorry for us. Pity is the only emotion other people will ever feel for us. You should have a guarded attitude like me sister. If any man notices us and should ever try getting close to us.

Remember we come from wealth sister from them, a wealthy family. People are always trying to get close to dad or mom because they want their money their influence. How are people going to know our financial status sister; when we look plain as we do; rich people don’t ride the bus. Just because we’ve been sheltered all our lives doesn’t mean the news hounds don’t have our photos and our stories published sister.

Abandoned

Who ever their real mother had been she was a beautiful woman for though she’d given birth to flawed babies she’d imparted her genes to her daughters and she must have been a real beauty. Jan was a brunette normal straight hair, while Janet was a red-haired girl and it was kind of frizzy like an Asian’s. Both Jan and Janet’s eyes were oval and their skin color a natural tan.

Riding the bus was Jan’s idea; she’d always scanned the streets while riding. Hoping against hope to perhaps even spot a woman who resembled herself. Perhaps she’d someday even recognizing one that could be their mother. While they were deformed they were quite stunning and at just five foot tall and tiny feet it was clear whoever their mom had been either she or their natural father had been of Asian decent.

Janet was normally the stronger of their two personalities. Perhaps Janet got that trait from their real mother. It must have been a very tough decision to carry a child full term and then discard it and she must have been alone in the world and knew raising deformed children would take too much of a toll. Or perhaps she was a wealthy woman an up and coming star or an important personality and having a baby would have been an imposition.

Or perhaps she was prostitute, there were prostitutes. A tear running down her cheek was unusual. Perhaps but God gave them a life for some reason now sister I don’t want to talk anymore Jan replied slipping her book into their book bag. Then seeing the tear running down her sister’s cheek too, that was unusual thought Jan. Janet acknowledged her sisters kindness in wiping her tear from her cheek.

They’d just celebrated their twenty third birthdays. In less than a week they’d graduate college at the tops of their class. They’d attended one of the most prestige’s colleges in the country. They had good reason to be proud but they kept their pride in tact. Despite their handicaps the sisters both had earned three PhD’s each. What else did they have Janet surmised; normal female college students went shopping and to parties and movies.

Normal college kids even made out with boyfriends. The twins weren’t normal nor were they ever likely to be normal. Separating them giving them a normal childhood had been looked at when they were first adopted by the Browns. Two heads, two brains in one body, two spinal cords, two hearts and three lungs, two spleens, one very large liver, one pancreas. They shared one digestive system but two in line sets of genitals with one functioning clitoris as far as they could tell.
