Unlock the more straightforward side of Kim with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Kim by Rudyard Kipling, which tells the story of the title character’s adventures in India alongside Teshoo lama, an elderly Buddhist holy man. Kim is an English orphan, but is intimately familiar with India, having grown up there, and feels himself to be a native of the country. In the course of his travels, he witnesses the religious and social tensions that are sweeping through the country, as well as the efforts of the British Intelligence Service to subjugate the native inhabitants and quell any stirrings of rebellion. Kim is one of Kipling’s most celebrated works; he is also the author of the story collection The Jungle Book and the poems “Mandalay” and “If–”.

RUDYARD KIPLING

ENGLISH NOVELIST, POET AND SHORT STORY WRITER

Born in Bombay (India) in 1865.Died in London in 1936.Notable works:The Jungle Book (1894), story collectionCaptains Courageous (1897), novelJust So Stories (1902), story collection

Rudyard Kipling is considered one of the most eminent English writers of his generation, and is remembered for his writings on the British Empire and India and his children’s stories. Though his infamous celebration of European imperialism means that he is sometimes regarded as antiquated and problematic in the context of increasingly socially liberal Western societies, his novels, stories and poetry are highly regarded for their expertise, ingenuity and vibrancy. He was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1965 to English parents and, after being educated in England, returned to India to work as a journalist. It was here that he began publishing his poetry and short stories, and he returned to England in 1889 to fanfare about the quality and popularity of his writing. In England Kipling found himself increasingly well-regarded as a writer and embarked on a prolific career that included a huge number of short stories and poetry collections, as well as four novels. In 1907, he became the first English person to win the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature and continued to write right up to his death in 1936, at the age of 70.

KIM

A COMING-OF-AGE STORY

Genre: novelReference edition: Kipling, R. (1998) Kim. Oxford: Oxford University Press.1stedition: 1901Themes: colonialism, British Empire, India, coming-of-age, race, religion, espionage

Kim is a novel set in late 19th-century British India, inspired by Kipling’s time living there as a journalist. It follows the episodic adventures of Kim, a young English vagabond who grew up on the streets of Lahore (now in Pakistan), as he accompanies a Buddhist lama on a quest and is recruited into the British Intelligence Service. Kim was met with critical acclaim when it was published in 1901, and is widely recognised both as Kipling’s finest work, and as one of the greatest British novels ever written about India. It is particularly well known for its detailed and startlingly vibrant depiction of the rich and diverse social, spiritual and natural culture of India. The novel has had a significant effect on British society, notably by popularising the term ‘the Great Game’ to describe political tensions between the Russian and British Empires throughout the 19th century. Due to its episodic nature, Kim has sometimes been described as a picaresque novel, though its genre also notably falls into the category of bildungsroman (meaning a novel which follows the spiritual development of its central character).
