Celeste Ng was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio at the age of 10. During her time in Shaker Heights, she developed both an avid passion for writing (co-editing her high school literary magazine) and a passion for exploring the intricate dynamics of race relations. Ng’s experience as a Chinese American growing up in the Midwest would go on to influence both of her later novels, Everything I Never Told You (2014) and Little Fires Everywhere (2017).

Ng went on to attend Harvard University, where she studied English literature. After briefly working in the textbook publishing industry, Ng decided to return to her lifelong passion of writing. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in writing at the University of Michigan. Ng’s first novel, Everything I Never Told You, earned great acclaim and was named the 2014 Amazon Book of the Year. Ng was praised for her interesting and heartbreaking presentation of loss among in a biracial family.
