Low blood pressure, also called hypotension, can signal an underlying problem. In severe cases, low blood pressure can be a sign of serious and life-threatening disorders.

A blood pressure reading of 90 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or less systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) or 60 mm Hg or less diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) is generally considered low blood pressure.

The symptoms of low blood pressure include dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting (syncope), lethargy, lack of concentration, blurred vision, nausea, fatigue, depression, rapid and shallow breathing, heart palpitations, cold hands and feet, cold, clammy and pale skin.

The causes of low blood pressure can be pregnancy, heart problems, endocrine problems (an underactive thyroid, adrenal insufficiency, menopause), low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), dehydration (for example because of fever, vomiting, severe diarrhea, diuretics, strenuous exercise), blood loss (injury, internal bleeding), an infection, a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), lack of nutrient (vitamins, minerals), anemia, certain medications (diuretics, alpha blockers, beta blockers, drugs for Parkinson's disease, certain types of antidepressants), metabolic disorders, diabetes, liver and kidney diseases, exhaustion, meteorosensitivity and an acidification of the body.

In the homeopathic and biochemical treatment (Schuessler salts) of low blood pressure, detoxification therapies serve the activation of metabolism, the immune system and strengthening the body's circulation.
