Man’s Hope

A chronicle of a brutal war

Genre: novelReference edition: Malraux, A. (1979) Man’s Fate. Trans: Gilbert, S. and Macdonald, A. New York: Random House.1st edition: 1937Themes: Spanish Civil War, politics, solidarity, courage

Man’s Hope was published in 1937. It covers the first eight month of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) between General Franco’s Nationalists – or fascists – and the Republicans who remained loyal to the country’s democratically elected government.

Man’s Hope, which was inspired by its author’s experience as a squadron leader on the Republican side in Spain, is an engaged war novel. Through his portrayal of a wide range of characters who hold differing political opinions, Malraux shows the courage and solidarity of the defenders of the Second Spanish Republic. When the novel was published, the war was still raging in Spain, and its realistic style, documentary function and emotion over the urgency of the battles make it an outstanding appeal on behalf of the Republican cause.
