Chapter 1 — Welcome and How to Use This Guide

1.1 Purpose of the guide

This book exists to teach a simple, reliable way to use ChatGPT over three focused days. The purpose is not to overwhelm you with every technical detail; it is to show what matters most so you can be confident and independent after practising the short lessons. You will learn how to get started, how to ask clear questions, how to keep yourself safe, and how to use ChatGPT for everyday tasks such as writing a short message, making a shopping list, or turning a spoken thought into tidy text.

This chapter explains how to use the whole guide, what to prepare before you begin, and how to practise in a way that sticks. Treat the book like a friendly tutor you can follow at your own speed.

1.2 Who this guide is for

This manual is written for total beginners and for older adults who prefer calm, patient instructions. It is for people who may not use technology every day and would rather see short, plain steps than long technical explanations. If you fall into any of the following groups, this guide is for you:

● You have not used ChatGPT before.
● You can use a phone, tablet or computer but want clearer ways to get helpful responses.
● You prefer step-by-step instructions and a reassuring tone.
● You need accessibility tips to make text larger or to hear the replies read aloud.

If you are already comfortable with computers, you will still find practical examples and prompts you can copy. If you are completely new to the internet, the early sections provide simple instructions and links to support organisations that help older people learn digital skills. Age UK offers step-by-step learning programmes and advice specifically tailored to older learners.

1.3 What you will learn in three days

This guide follows a gentle, practical plan:

● Day one: Getting started — creating or accessing an account (or using the service as a guest where available), signing in, basic navigation, and the essential safety settings. You will feel comfortable sending your first question and reading the replies. I show exactly where to click and what to type. Official setup and data control features are summarised so you will understand how to export or delete your information if you choose.
● Day two: Asking well — how to write prompts that produce clear, useful answers; how to request short or long answers and how to refine replies with follow-ups; practical templates you can copy for emails, lists and simple planning.
● Day three: Everyday use — using voice and images (where available), accessibility options to make the interface easier to read or hear, saving and printing conversations, and routine projects you can finish without help.

By the end of the three days you will be able to use ChatGPT for a wide range of everyday tasks, to tailor replies to your needs, and to keep your account and data under sensible control.

1.4 How to practise each lesson

This guide works best if you practise immediately after reading each short lesson. Here is a simple routine I recommend:

Read one short unit (about five minutes).

Try the exact step on your device as you follow. Use a quiet room so the voice features work better.

Repeat the step until it feels comfortable — one repetition is not enough.

If you are unsure, write a short note in a notebook: what did you type, what did ChatGPT reply, did you understand it?

Do a small “project” at the end of each day: a shopping list, a family message, or a short note you can print.

Small practice tasks are included at the end of every chapter. If you are using the book with a friend or family member, read the steps aloud and take turns practising. Age UK runs local programmes and helpful guides if you want an in-person class or one-to-one help.

1.5 Device and internet requirements

You will need:

● A device: desktop or laptop computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you only use a single device often — great; we will show options for all of them.
● A stable internet connection. If your home Wi-Fi is slow, try standing closer to the router or turning the router off and on again once. If you are using mobile data, check how much allowance you have — voice and images can use more data.
● An email address to sign up if you choose to create an account. If you do not want to create an account, some services offer a guest option which lets you use ChatGPT without signing up, although the provider may still collect interaction data unless you opt out in settings. Providers’ sign-up pages explain the form fields and the confirmation step.

Simple checklist before you begin a session:

● Device charged or plugged in.
● Wi-Fi on and connected.
● Email open (if you are signing up).
● A quiet place for voice practice.

1.6 Accessibility tips for seniors

Sensible adjustments make screens far easier to use. You do not need special equipment for most of these changes — they are built into your device.

● Increase text size. Most devices let you increase font size at system level or zoom into the page with a pinch gesture (on phones and tablets) or Ctrl+ (on Windows) / Command+ (on Mac). Large print is often 16 to 18 point; giant print is larger still. The Royal National Institute of Blind People describes how to change font sizes and access large print options for those with reduced vision.
● Use screen readers if needed. Devices have built-in screen readers: VoiceOver on Apple, TalkBack on Android, and Narrator on Windows. These read aloud menus and messages so you can listen to replies. Practice the basic gestures in a quiet room.
● Enable dictation. If typing is slow, practice using the microphone button (voice input) to speak to ChatGPT instead. Speak naturally in short sentences and pause briefly between ideas. We cover specific steps for iPhone and Android later in the book.
● High contrast and bold text. Switching to high-contrast mode and choosing a bold, clear font helps reading comfort. Government guidance on accessible communication suggests using clear black-on-white text and avoiding dense blocks of tiny text.
● One feature at a time. Change only one setting at a time so you remember how to reverse the change if it does not suit you.

These changes make a big difference for everyday comfort. Later chapters show exact menus and taps for each device.

1.7 Simple terms you need to know before starting

Here are a few short definitions to remove the mystery:

● ChatGPT (the assistant): The conversational tool you ask questions of. It replies in plain text and can follow simple instructions. The name “ChatGPT” identifies the product; other similar services exist but this manual focuses on this assistant’s common interfaces.
● Prompt: The words you type (or speak) to ask ChatGPT for help. A clear prompt explains who you are, what you want, and the format you want back.
