Matilda first appeared in 1988, and tells the story of a gifted child named Matilda who is rejected by her vulgar parents, who have no concern for education or culture. This young girl is not only incredibly intelligent, devouring literature at an astonishing pace, but also has telekinetic powers (meaning she can make objects move with the force of her mind). She uses her powers to help her school teacher Miss Honey escape from the clutches of her aunt, the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, who has robbed her of her inheritance. The text centres around two spheres in Matilda’s little world: home, dominated by television, and school, where Miss Trunchbull rules with an iron fist.
