Chapter 1 - What is meditation?

Meditation is a mental discipline or exercise. It enables a person to improve his or her everyday ‘thinking’ mind to reach a higher state of mental relaxation and awareness. Meditation decreases the pressure and tension of modern lifestyle and helps you to lead a more contented and prolific life.

The word ‘meditation’ is derived from the Latin words ‘meditari’ (which may be translated as ‘to think’; ‘to dwell upon’; or ‘to exercise the mind’) and ‘mederi’ (to heal).

Meditation consists of various techniques to reach a state of mental consciousness in which the mind becomes free of random or scattered thoughts. In this state, a person becomes acutely aware of his or her self and surroundings. Meditation leads to many desirable mental and emotional changes which help to cope with anxiety and stress.

Meditation is a confirmed alternative, holistic healing treatment today. More and more doctors are prescribing meditation as a supplement to medication – to lower blood pressure; relieve insomnia and other stress related ailments. Along with medication, include meditation to get rid of illnesses to lead a satisfied life.

History of meditation

Meditation has been practiced since ancient times in eastern religions like Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindu scriptures mentioned meditation techniques, ‘Tantras’, as far back as 5000 years. Elements of meditative techniques can also be found in many other major religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. However the Hinduism and Buddhism based meditative techniques are the most popular the world over.

The main endeavor of meditation according to Hinduism is to arrive at a state of calm and peace. The yoga texts explain that there are five different states for the mind. They’re -

Ksipta

Mudha

Viksipta

Ekagra

Nirodhah

In the Ksipta state the mind is agitated and cannot think rationally. In the Mudha state nothing reaches as the mind as it is in anxiety mode. In the Viksipta stage the information may reach the brain but the mind is unable to decipher it. It is here that incoherent speech and actions takes place. The fourth state of mind is the Ekagra where the mind is focused on a single object. In this state the mind concentrates only in one direction. In the fifth and last stage Nirodhah, the mind is under complete control. Sages and Gurus reach the Nirodhah state of mind to attain Nirvana.

Meditation spread to the Western world mainly around the mid-20th century; thousands of years after the Eastern world were practicing it. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is one of the important Gurus to have made meditation popular among the Western world. The subject has gained popularity since the early 1960s and 70s and many research projects have been undertaken since then to ascertain the beneficial effects of meditation. Today meditation is taught as a discipline in several schools and colleges. In depth research is going on in several fields of psychology in connection to meditation.

Meditation is currently an exceptionally popular discipline. It is widely practiced the world over, even outside religious traditions, because of the multitude of benefits that it offers. Meditation, in fact, is becoming quite a popular practice in the Western world among people from all walks of life. For many, meditation is part of daily living, like eating. Different people practicing daily meditation may have different goals; achieving greater focus, self-awareness and creativity; reaching a more relaxed or peaceful frame of mind; or attaining a higher level of consciousness etc.
