At exactly twelve noon, I once more heard a whisper of sound from behind me. Swiveling around in my chair, I took in the unlikely trio marching through my reception area. He led the procession dressed in the same outlandish and wrinkled outfit from earlier. Another man wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and blue tie followed closely behind. The third member of the trio, bringing up the rear, turned out to be a twenty-something girl, sporting all black, including dyed-black hair, black eye shadow, and black lipstick.

Introduction
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.
It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.
This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.
This may be the start of something amazing!
“I got the job, Mrs. Dooley, and start tomorrow!” I squealed as I threw open the apartment door. “Yay me! Yay us!”
“Never had a doubt,” Mrs. Dooley said with a grin as she turned to retrieve something from the counter. “Which is why I baked this,” she finished as she moved out of the kitchen to the small dining area. “I figured you’d be starving since you skipped breakfast this morning.”
“Is that my favorite cake in the whole wide world?”
“Milk chocolate cake with my special milk chocolate pudding frosting...” she said as she set it down on the dining table with a flourish.
“What if I hadn’t gotten the job?”
“Consolation prize,” she offered with a chuckle.
“That works, too. You, Mrs. Dooley, must be a miracle worker. Everything is still in boxes from our move yesterday,” I noted as I joined her, staring down at the object of our discussion, mouth watering. “How in the world did you bake a cake?”
“I put some things away,” she corrected, “but, about the cake, I must confess...I cheated.”
“You...? Cheat...? Never,” I objected with laughter in my voice. “How did you cheat?”
“I baked this while you were in town meeting with Dot the day before yesterday and stuck it in the freezer for safe keeping knowing you were leaving. I planned to pack it for you to find, but since we decided to go together, while my church-going friends’ husbands were loading up the trailers with all of our things yesterday, I pulled it out of the freezer and put it in the cooler with the other cold food items I packed.”
“You are without a doubt the best roomie anyone could ever ask for,” I said giving her a peck on the cheek.
“Humph,” she snorted in disbelief. “Just wait. You’ll live to regret having me for a roommate.”
“Not happening.”
“We’ll see.”
“Anyway, at least we have something to eat,” I said glancing around in dismay. “I’m not sure how we’ll find anything in all of these boxes.”
“I labeled each of them in great detail and actually managed to make quite a dent while you were interviewing.”
“Oh cool, sorry I didn’t notice. I mean, there aren’t any empty boxes lying around so I assumed...”
“We have very convenient recycle and trash chutes at the end of the hall and I made good use of them.”
“Great! So just tell me what I can do to help and we’ll have the rest of this whipped out in no time.”
“Don’t worry about the kitchen. I have that handled. You have enough on your plate making sure you have your outfit put together in order to look the part of the efficient secretary tomorrow.”
“I didn’t mean for you to think you have to cook for me.”
“You know cooking and sewing are my two favorite pastimes.”
“But still...I don’t...I mean, you had to come up with the deposit and the first month’s rent because I’m basically broke. It’s not fair to you.”
“Here’s the deal, Shannon. Because I ate your parents’ food and lived in their house rent-free for years, I have a little money saved, but it won’t last long, so until we get our sewing business going strong, we’ll be living off your paycheck. In order to hold up my end of the bargain, I paid for the first month and I plan to cook and keep the apartment clean. End of discussion.”
“Okay, but...”
“There are no ‘buts’ here.”
