About the Author

J. Dennis Thomas, known to his friends as Denny, has been interested in photography since his early teens when he found some of his father’s old photography equipment and photographs of the Vietnam War. Fortunately, he was able to take photography classes with an amazing teacher that started him on a path of learning that has never stopped.

Denny’s first paying photography gig was in 1990 when he was asked to do promotional shots for a band being promoted by Warner Bros. Records. Although he has pursued many different career paths through the years, including a few years of being a musician, his love of photography and the printed image has never waned.

With the advent of digital photography, although he was resistant to give up film, Denny realized there was yet more to learn in the realm of photography. It was just like starting all over. Photography was fresh and exciting again. Realizing that the world of digital photography was complex and new, Denny decided to pursue a degree in photography in order to learn the complex techniques of digital imaging with the utmost proficiency.

Eventually Denny decided to turn his life-long passion into a full time job. He currently owns his own company, Dead Sailor Productions, a photography and graphic design business. He does freelance work for companies including RedBull Energy Drink, Obsolete Industries, Secret Hideout Studios, and Digital Race Photography. He continues to photograph bands, including LA Guns, the US Bombs, Skid Row, Quiet Riot, Echo & the Bunnymen, Dick Dale, Link Wray, and Willie Nelson. He has been published in several regional publications and continues to show his work in various galleries throughout the country.

He is also the author of the Nikon Creative Lighting System Digital Field Guide and the Canon Speedlite System Digital Field Guide.

Introduction

Nikon has been leading the way with compact digital cameras since the introduction of the COOLPIX camera line. Nikon has recently revamped their entire line of compact digital cameras with the introduction of the P, S, and L series of COOLPIX cameras.

Whether you’re a casual point and shooter, who only needs a camera that is designed to grab photos to preserve memorable occasions, or the photographic hobbyist looking for a camera that provides a little more creative control — Nikon has a COOLPIX camera for you.

With features such as Vibration Reduction, One-Touch Portrait, in-camera Red-eye Fix, a plethora of Scene modes, and Wi-fi, your pictures will be like never before once you learn to effectively use all the great features your camera offers.

The P or Performance-series cameras are at the top of the Nikon COOLPIX line. Providing automatic as well as fully manual settings, you can have complete control of how the camera captures the image. The P-Series flagship camera is the COOLPIX P-5000 which even lets you add Nikon Speedlight flashes for the ultimate in lighting control.

The S or Style-series cameras are Nikon’s ultra small super-compact cameras. Some of these cameras are no bigger than a credit card and less than half an inch wide. They can fit perfectly right into your pocket or purse, so you never need be without a camera to capture those fleeting moments.

The L or Life-series cameras offer the ease of use of a point and shoot camera with some amazingly advanced features. The high-resolution sensor and Nikon’s in-camera image processing provides you with accurate detail and stunning colors. All of this can be achieved without worrying about the settings — allowing you to focus on composition.

What’s in This Book for You?

You’re probably wondering if these cameras are so easy to use why do I need this book? Well, while these cameras can be used simply as a point and shoot, you may want to expand your creative horizons a bit to produce something more than snapshots.

If you’re like me, the last thing you want to do is sit down and spend a few hours looking at an owner’s manual that can read like stereo instructions. So, this book covers everything from setting up your camera from the get-go to real world applications and practical advice on shooting in a variety of situations. All of this is presented in an easy-to-understand and informative manner.

There are also dozens of tricks and tips on how to use the Scene modes properly and how to use the Scene modes to trick your camera into doing things for creative purposes.

You will find a section on composition that will help you to stretch you artistic wings, creating more expressive images and encouraging you to see the world in a different way — always thinking about what will be the best angle, the best light, the best subject, for the best shot.

The COOLPIX line of cameras are easy-to-use (which is why they are such great little cameras), and no matter which Nikon COOLPIX camera you are using, there is something in this book for you — from the very basics to information that will help you gain more confidence in your photography. This book’s aim is to help you use your camera’s diverse features to get the best pictures possible.
