Dedication
We thoughtfully dedicate this book to R.J. Palacio, the author of our beloved Wonder. This novel has become an integral part of our classroom over the last 4 years. The lessons she inspires through this book for our impressionable middle school kids include nearly every element of fiction, plot development, figurative language, oh the symbolism, and (most importantly, as they begin their middle school journey) an infinite amount of character development. Thank you for introducing us to such relate-able characters from whom our kids can learn to “choose kind.” Congratulations on the movie! I know 4 years worth of middle school kids are so pumped!

Once upon a time in a valley village between two mountains, lived a MLG stickman named Liam. Liam was a hardworking man at the blacksmith's shop. Customers traveled from faraway lands to buy Liam’s swords and armor.
One day a customer asked Liam, “Have you heard about the mountain dragon?”
Liam had never seen a dragon, but always heard stories about men trying to catch and train dragons. “No one had ever been able to do so,” Liam responded.”Yes, I’ve heard of people going to the mountains, but they never return.”
“I'm sure with your amour I could do wonders,” replied the customer.
“What is your name, Sir?” Liam asked.
“Zander,” he replied.
“Are you planning on traveling through the mountains, Zander?” Liam asked. He had always been interested in the dragons.
“Yes,” Zander answered. “Would you like to come along? We would make a great team!”
Liam contemplated this. No one would miss him, and he had always dreamed of traveling the world and finding a dragon. Maybe if he went with Zander, he would be able to find one.
“I'll have to think about it,” Liam said.
“I'm leaving in two sunsets. Meet me here if you decide to come,” Zander replied as he walked away.
Liam spent two days making his best armor and swords. He couldn’t leave without making sure his cat, Ginger, was taken care of. He took the cat to the church and asked the preacher to look after the cat. Finally, on the second day at sunset, Liam met Zander outside the blacksmith's shop.
“Glad you could make it!” Zander said.
“Well, I can’t let you have all the fun,” Liam said with a laugh. He tossed Zander a bag with a special set of armor he had made.
“That's so you don’t get killed,” Liam chuckled.
“Well aren't you sweet,” Zander laughed sarcastically.
Liam and Zander set off to the East Mountains. They walked for days, unable to find any signs of the dragons that supposedly lived in the area.
On the twenty-sixth day, Liam and Zander stumbled upon a cave high up at the tip of the East Mountain.
“Would you look at that,” Zander said as he looked into the pitch black cave.
“Do you think they are there?” Liam asked.
“There is only one way to find out,” Zander replied.
Slowly, Liam and Zander made their way into the cave with their torches in their hands.
“We’ve been walking forever!” Zander said.
“We are so close to finding a dragon,” Liam insisted. “We can’t give up yet.”
After another 2,000 feet, Liam heard something.
“Do you hear that?” Zander asked Liam as he shushed him with a wave. They listened very quietly and heard footsteps.
“Hide!” Zander whispered frantically.
Liam hid by a big rock and hid the light of the torch. Zander hid alongside Liam. Two sets of glowing yellow eyes filled the cave with light. Zander saw the green leathery skin was marred by a sword sticking out.
Zander whispered to Liam, “I think it’s hurt.”
Liam and Zander slowly approached the green dragon. Then a blue dragon jumped from behind the green one and landed in front of it with a furious look on its face.
Zander said, “We don't want to hurt you.”
Understanding flashed in the blue dragon's eyes. Then Liam slowly approached the green dragon and pulled the sword out of its wound.
Liam slowly patted the dragon and said, “It’s okay. I won't hurt you.”
Liam quickly took off his jacket and wrapped it tightly around the dragon's leg to prevent further bleeding.
Liam and Zander stayed with the two dragons for the next week until the green dragon healed. They would hunt for the dragons, bringing them food. They were mesmerized by them.
One day while out hunting, Liam heard a shriek. He saw a neon red dragon flying overhead, circling him and Zander. Liam didn't know what to do. He didn’t want to hurt the dragon, but he also didn't want to become red’s next meal. Liam and Zander quickly made their way to the trees for cover.
“What should we do?” Zander questioned.
“I don’t know,” answered Liam. He couldn’t bring himself to hurt the dragon after they had just helped the other one.
“Liam, look!” Zander yelled.
Swooping in were their two dragons. Almost as if they were staking their claim on Liam and Zander. The red dragon seemed to take the hint she was outnumbered and flew away.
The green dragon, whom Liam had been referring to as ‘Breadsticks’, approached Liam and crouched down in front of him; as if asking him a silent question. Liam hastily got on Breadsticks’ back.
When Zander came out of the woods, he approached ‘Skye,’ the blue dragon, and she quickly crouched down and allowed him to climb on board.
Now, Liam and Zander were forever known as the Dragon Boys, and went on to have many more adventures.
The End
By Justin Arnold
Many years ago, Lynx and his brother, Wolverine, were separated when they were little. They were separated because Wolverine was a wolf and Lynx was a fierce cat. Their parents didn’t think that they belonged in the same pack.
But the brothers were given special powers when they were born. Lynx was born with the gift of fire, and Wolverine was born with the gift of speed and fire. The brothers never thought that they would use these powers again.
Lynx was going to school. He had a test in math and studied the whole week. When Friday came, he was worried he was not going to pass because it was the EOG math test. Lynx was going to class when he bumped into a random kid that he thought looked very familiar. It was his brother, Wolverine. Lynx decided to tell him who he was, and Wolverine became excited. The brothers hit it off and started talking about old times and how their lives had been since they were separated.
Lynx asked Wolverine if he remembered Brainy from Big Town, the town that they lived in before they were separated. Wolverine said, “Yes, what’s he been up to? No good?”
Now remember, this story is a saga. Brainy was a really bad guy who’d tried to take over the world by reading people's minds. Lynx replied to Wolverine, “Yes, he is always up to no good.”
At that moment, the teachers announced that Brainy had arrived at their school. Instantly, the teachers shouted, “Take cover!”
Once the students were safe, Lynx and Wolverine decided to find Brainy. They were not going to let Brainy take over the school.
All of the sudden, Brainy entered the hallway. Brainy knew Wolverine and Lynx had reunited because his superpower was reading minds and he saw flames. Brainy knew those flames. They were dark flames. He knew that when Lynx was ready to pounce because his flames grew bigger.
What Brainy didn’t know was how fast Wolverine could run. Before he knew it, Wolverine was right next to him!
Wolverine started to run circles of flames around Brainy. Lynx shot a big fireball at him. Brainy’s power made a shield, reflecting the fireball at Lynx. He jumped over it. All of a sudden, the flames hit the wall, and the wood on the walls started to collapse.
