Beschreibung

The pamphlet, "Pentecost for England," by the Rev. Alexander A. Boddy (1854-1930) in 1907 for distribution at the Keswick Convention of 1907. Writing only one year after the initial Pentecostal outpourings of Los Angeles and elsewhere, Boddy says that already 20,000 people have received the gift of speaking in tongues worldwide although only six of those people were in Great Britain. Later in the same year, 1907, Boddy hosted a Pentecostal revival at his church in Sunderland, with guest speaker T.B. Barrett, at which there was an outpouring of Pentecostal gifts.

Speaking With Tongues

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth (buildeth up) himself.”

— 1 Corinthians 14:4.

This pamphlet is compiled in order to supply information as to that which is believed by thousands of the Lord’s people to be a wonderful work of God.

The first two articles are written by the compiler, who writes as a witness (but only a witness, so far).

The last article is by one who has spoken in ‘Tongues,’ and his words deserve careful study.

However much this ‘Sign’ is opposed or ignored, or imitated closely by Stan, we are absolutely convinced that God Himself is working mightily. The message that comes from all who speak with tongues is ‘Jesus is coming.’ Is the Lord’s Bride making herself ready?

It is said that some 20,000 people today (and that a low computation) are “Speaking with tongues,” or have so spoken. These persons believe with their whole being that it is the blessed Holy Spirit of God that has possessed them, and thus unmistakably witnessed to his incoming and his indwelling. For them it is “Pentecost” indeed.

It is very significant that out of the 20,000 throughout this world not more than perhaps half dozen persons in Great Britain are known by the writer to have had this experience. Yet it seems to him that a time is very swiftly coming when there will be marvelous things to be related by many hungry children of God who in little bands here and there are crying to Him for a Pentecost with the signs following.

1. The writer has been encouraged to believe that the Lord intends to do a pure work in this land. We shall benefit by the experience of others. So far, the few testimonies he has received have carried with them internal evidence that it was

— “None of self, but all of Thee.”

Read for instance words written by a working man from a busy street in the west end of London: —

“It can only be with the object of giving all the glory to our glorious Lord that your humble brother will write these lines, and that the Holy Spirit might use my humble testimony for the glory of our risen Savior and Lord.

“In speaking of the blessed things of God let us ever realize that we are treading on Holy Ground, and let us take our shoes off our feet. So many Christians treat these precious things of God in a very indifferent manner, they say they are rich and want nothing. Oh, let us beware how we treat God’s own word, so that we may not commit the sin of limiting the Holy One of Israel. But, brethren, I am persuaded better things of you, and by the tone of your letter and tracts I see that you are really hungry for all the fullness of God, and it is only the really hungry ones the dear Lord can fill.

“Now to come to answer your letter, dear brother, I, with all humility, and giving my once crucified and now risen and glorified Lord all the glory, can tell you and all the dear ones that the gift of tongues is to me a glorious reality according to His own blessed promise in Mark 16:17. Glory to God. I praise Him at my work and walking in the streets, and oh the joy is unspeakable and full of Glory. Praise Him forever.

“About three months ago I was told of the meeting at our dear friend’s house, and after attending there ( and very much waiting, waiting on the Lord) for about three weeks, one night a great wave of glory came over my soul and I took this to be the baptism with the Holy Spirit, but the gift of tongues was not given me, and afterwards the Lord revealed it to me, it was the day of my full sanctification, and so I was led to keep on waiting even more earnestly upon the Lord, for the baptism of the Holy Spirit and after getting as a thirsty land, but full believing that the Lord would not disappoint. His Blood-bought Dust, the night before Good Friday the Lord came in mighty power and slew me and in His great mercy gave me the evidence of His blessed filling.

“But I beg to say here that I did not ask for the gift of tongues, I only asked for the gift of the Holy Spirit; I am afraid that is where so many dear ones fail. They look only at the gift of tongues. Oh what a difference the blessed Comforter makes in one’s life when He comes in. It cannot be explained, dear ones; and another thing, dear saints, the enemy gets very fierce. We read of our blessed Lord after He was baptized He was led of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil, and the servant is not above his Master, dear ones, and for the sake of Jesus and the love of the Spirit, I earnestly covet your prayers on my behalf that I might be kept at my proper place covered with the precious blood of Christ the only safe shelter.”

2. Why should the desire to ‘speak with other tongues as the Spirit gives them utterance’ come to very earnest Christian men and women, who, while willing to obey God’s clear leading at all costs, have not any clear leading toward the Foreign Mission Field?

Answer — That which God gives at the time is not usually a complete language though sometimes it is so. It is often just enough of a strange tongue to show the seeker that it is no longer himself but Another worshiping through him.

It may be in the tongue of men or angels, or changing swiftly from language to language. Sometimes with interpretation given — more often at first no interpretation.
