There are people who explore and forge ahead in every age. They often blaze trails in unknown territories to settle new lands. Some do so spiritually, and the early American pioneers practiced both. The Pioneers undertook significant risks and hardships in traveling to remote destinations and taming and settling those unfamiliar lands.
The pioneers of early America were primarily settlers who moved westward during the 19th century. Many followed the Oregon Trail. They contributed to much of the nation's expansion while facing and overcoming many hardships.
More than 70% of the pioneers were Christian, and several missionary movements were among them. Prayer and faith were paramount, and they turned to the Word of God in all their actions throughout each day. They drove ahead with a steadfast trust in God in their quest for a better life.
This book invites you on a spiritual journey comparable to that of the early pioneers. Whether you are familiar with their history or are learning about them for the first time, their spirit of faith, perseverance, and caring for each other is an inspiring equivalent to our path of cultivating and refining impactful prayer and intercession.
Continue through the pages of this book to learn skillful methods for moving forward in God’s Will. Your journey in intercession will create a legacy of faith and prayer that will endure forever.
"As we set forth on this journey, we trust that each step we take is guided by Providence, leading us into new lands with the hope of building something enduring." — Eliza Spalding’s Letter, 1836
As a Christian, you are a pioneer in prayer, charting new paths in the spiritual wilderness.
A pioneer sees potential and is willing to explore new frontiers. A Christian pioneer will venture into unfamiliar territory and create fresh ways to promote the gospel. We must overcome challenges to reach as many as possible in intercession, knowing that our prayers can overcome any barrier.
The early American Christian pioneers present an excellent example of prevailing prayer and living for God. Throughout the chapters of this book, allusions are made about their lives and travels. The pioneers were people of prayer and relied on scripture often in their prayers and intercessions. They leaned on the Word of God for support in all areas of their lives.
God establishes many promises throughout scripture and guides us in all areas. What better way to intercede than to petition using God’s Word?
We know God never lies, so we are confident He will fulfill the promises in His timing. We know He knows everything, and His instructions are out of love for us. Our great God wishes we would live lives of hope and worthy of Him, and His Word guides us in this prayer journey.
When we pray scripture directed to us, we are joining with God in His Will. This gives us confidence that we are praying as we should for His Will to be done. As intercessors, we are devoted to blessing others through our prayers.
Blessing is also a form of intercession. Blessings serve as powerful tools to intercede for others and ally us with God's Will. Following is a combined blessing and prayer interceding for all Christians. I included the Aaronic Blessing. Although the Aaronic Blessing made by God was given to Aaron, the high priest at that time, we can pray the same. We are all priests in Christ.
I pray the following prayer every day, combining and intertwining scriptural passages. The body of the prayer is crafted entirely from Bible verses. Only the prayer opening and closing are not.
This request to God has considerable meaning and flows freely from my heart. Praying God’s Word for others somehow brings them closer, as if you can feel their warmth and thoughts. The prayer is lengthy, but I look forward to and enjoy the privilege of praying His words for Christians every day, a prayer that extends to all of you.
For my brothers and sisters in Christ, all Christians throughout the world, and those who will come to faith during these times and until the end of the great tribulation, I offer this prayer and blessing:
May the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. May He grant you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed. I pray that you enjoy good health and that all goes well with you, even as your soul prospers.
I pray that out of His glorious riches, God may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless by Him at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. I ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live lives worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way.
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with boundless joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!
May the God of peace equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in you what is pleasing to Him, through Christ Jesus, to whom be glory forever and ever. And may the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, Himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.
Though the mountains be shaken, and the hills be removed, may His unfailing love for you not be shaken, nor His covenant of peace removed by the Lord, who has compassion for you. May the Lord keep you from all harm—watch over your life; and watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. I ask that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.
Now may the Lord of peace Himself always give you peace and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. May any who lacks wisdom ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and He will give it to you. May our Lord pour out His grace abundantly to you, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Yahweh bless you, and keep you: Yahweh make his face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: Yahweh lift up his face upon you and give you peace.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
I pray all these blessings upon you in Christ’s loving and prevailing name. Amen.
The names "God" or "LORD" are titles. However, God's personal name is YHWH. God gave this name to Moses. The name is likely pronounced "Yahweh" or "Jehovah." In reverence, the ancient Jews wrote YHWH instead of saying it out loud.
The name means more than just "I Am." It indicates God’s unbroken presence with us. Some even believe the pronunciation of YHWH is the same as the sound of breathing through the mouth, with "Yah" inhaling and "Weh" exhaling. And that it demonstrates the life He created speaks of Him in His name. Even from birth.
In the same way, intercessory prayer is an act of deep reverence and humility before God. When we intercede for others, we stand in the gap, making requests that might otherwise go unspoken on their behalf.
Many people feel that those who intercede more often than most try to behave and believe as if they are superior and extraordinary Christians. Hopefully, none of us who intercede at length and even full-time feel that way about ourselves.
God calls all people to intercede. However, some know they have a calling to prioritize intercession as their ministry, praying often for individuals, groups, nations, and more. They work as intercessors in diverse situations as the Holy Spirit prompts them. Even with all my weaknesses, I have such a calling.
I am an old man with many problems and issues from the past, even from when I was a small child. I have health issues on top of it all. I have no power or superior ability and am not remotely remarkable or successful in life. I do not have a wife or a family and spend much time alone. I am a broken man.
I can't boast about my greatness or take pride in my achievements. There is nothing in my life that I can claim as my success. On my own, I am neither powerful nor capable of achieving extraordinary outcomes. It is God who performs all the work. I simply follow His command to intercede as He wishes. He uses these intercessory petitions with His unlimited power to accomplish His Will for individuals, groups, nations, and the world.
That is why God uses me powerfully to intercede for many worldwide. I cannot take credit for anything He may complete through my prayers. It is about the Lord's Will, not mine. Intercession is my calling. It is what the Spirit chose me to accomplish within the body of Christ.
It is not only a calling but also a command.
The Old and New Testaments are filled with commands to pray. These are not mere suggestions but clear directives. For instance, in the Book of Psalms, it is proclaimed, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”
The New Testament has an even greater number of direct commands to pray. This is especially noticeable in the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. One of the most assertive commands many don’t recognize as such is in 1 Thessalonians, "Pray without ceasing."
During the strong missionary movement of the early pioneers, they prayed without ceasing. Dangerous conditions, unforeseeable accidents, and threats and attacks on their lives were faced. They put their faith in God and continued to plow forward courageously. We must do the same.
