When Ranger Cal Bennett transfers to Whispering Pines, he expects solitude—not the spirited camp director who seems to light up the entire forest. Lily Marsh runs Camp Evergreen with heart, grit, and a deep love for the land—but she's never met a ranger who keeps so much behind his eyes.
Assigned to work together restoring the camp’s overgrown trails, Cal and Lily form an unexpected bond. Through quiet conversations, shared hikes, and one missing camper who brings painful memories back to the surface, they begin to uncover what it means to truly heal.
As Cal wrestles with a past he can’t quite outrun and Lily opens a space in her world for someone who doesn’t ask for much but needs more than he’s willing to admit, a question grows between them: can a trail that feels like closure also be the start of something new?
Emotionally rich, filled with the peace of the wild and the warmth of human connection, Ranger’s Rest is a clean, heartfelt romance about finding home in another soul.
Will they both be brave enough to take the first step—together?

Cal
The mountains rose like silent sentinels beyond the trees, their peaks softened by morning mist. Cal Bennett stepped out of the ranger station with a slow, steady breath, the scent of pine and damp earth settling into his lungs. It was a quiet welcome—no city traffic, no radios blaring from passing cars, no clipped orders echoing down cement hallways. Just the whisper of wind through branches and the occasional birdsong riding the air.
He adjusted the strap of his backpack and glanced toward the cluster of cabins nestled near the trailhead. Camp Evergreen. Children’s laughter filtered through the trees, light and distant. The sound brushed against something in his chest that he couldn’t name.
This was supposed to be a fresh start.
The station door creaked behind him.
“You heading out to meet the camp director?” asked Grace, the senior ranger, a woman with sun-silvered hair and the no-nonsense tone of someone who’d seen it all.
Cal nodded. “Trail maintenance briefing.”
“She’ll have a clipboard and a thousand ideas. Lily doesn’t slow down much.”
Cal offered the barest smile. “I’ll keep up.”
Grace studied him for a second longer than he liked, then turned back inside, letting the screen door rattle shut behind her.
The path to Camp Evergreen curved gently through a thicket of birch and spruce, soft pine needles muffling his steps. As he walked, Cal let the rhythm of the trail quiet his thoughts. Nature had always been his anchor. Out here, the chaos faded. Out here, the ghosts kept their distance.
He spotted her before she saw him.
A woman in hiking boots and a faded green T-shirt knelt by the signpost near the camp entrance, adjusting a flower box with more enthusiasm than most people gave to landscaping. Her dark hair was twisted into a practical braid, a pencil tucked behind her ear. She was talking—no, humming—to herself, completely unaware of the approaching ranger.
“Lily Marsh?” he called gently.
She startled, straightened, then brushed dirt off her hands and smiled. “Ranger Cal. You’re early.”
“Old habit.”
She extended a hand. “I’m glad. I’ve got a trail map and a priority list ready to go. Walk with me?”
He hesitated just a fraction. Then he took her hand, shook it once—firm and brief—and nodded. “Lead the way.”
They walked along a gravel path that edged the camp’s perimeter. Tents flapped lightly in the breeze. A few early campers darted between trees, calling to each other, their voices rising like echoes. Cal kept his eyes forward.
“We’ve had a rough spring,” Lily said, unrolling a laminated trail map as they walked. “Heavy storms downed branches all along the eastern loop. I’d love to reopen it before the second camp session. The views up there are incredible.”
