At some point in every girl's childhood, she goes through periods of uncertainty when she is unaware of her full potential. Insecurity, shyness, fear of negative attention, doubts… they can be so overwhelming that they keep her awake at night. It was no different for Rapha: a disastrous event made her realise that she was sending the wrong message to everyone around her. This big discovery changed the way that she thought, felt, and acted, which turned her into a happier, fulfilled girl. In this book, Raphaela learns that any girl can be a princess with no need for a crown.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank my parents and my whole family for their love and care. Because of you, I had a happy childhood. Thank you for always striving to keep our family united, even when many others were falling apart.

Cristiane Cardoso, who “drives me nuts” by putting so much faith in me. This book is proof of that. Thank you for challenging me and seeing far beyond what I could see. I am grateful for your affection and especially for your faith. I could never express my immense love and gratitude here.

My husband, Guilherme, who knows me better than anyone — and loves me anyway. He supports me in all my new adventures. Thank you for saying that my book is funny! It was your opinion that encouraged me to show it to other people. As always, you make me better.

And the One who made everything I mentioned above possible: my God, who has never given up on me. Every day, He shows me that I can live a happier and more beautiful story than I could ever imagine. I dedicate this book — and my whole life — to You. Thank you, my God!

Before anything else

Suddenly, all eyes seemed to be looking in my direction. It was as if the room were spinning; my legs were shaking. Would I be able to carry out this idea? What was I thinking? In my despair, I could hear a voice saying, “Breathe, take a deep breath, you can do it!” For a moment, I regained my focus and pulled myself together... but then I saw the reason for the butterflies in my stomach. Now I was sure I shouldn’t have come.

My name is Raphaela Castro. I am 11 years old and that was the moment I dreaded the most... I could tell you why, but you wouldn’t understand. To understand how important, dreadful, and crucial that moment was for me, we need to go back to the start... the beginning of everything!

Chapter 1

The end of a story and the beginning of a new one

The expectation was huge. The long-awaited moment had finally arrived.

The little room in my home was waiting for the newest member of the family. In the hospital waiting room, two people anxiously awaited the baby who would be the last of three children — two girls so far. My father’s heart burned with the hope that this time his dream would come true.

“Eli, stop pacing back and forth! You’re making me dizzy. Everyone will think it’s the first time you’ve waited for a baby to be born in a hospital,” my aunt said.

“This time is different,” Dad said.

“What’s different about it?”

“This time, it’s going to be a boy!”

“So, that’s why you’re so anxious!” she said, finally understanding. She put her hand on his shoulder and said, “Calm down. Your boy is on his way... your long-awaited boy. After spending your entire life surrounded by a mother and three sisters and then with a wife and two daughters for the last twelve years, it’s time you had a boy. He’s going to be your little companion.”

When he heard this, Dad couldn’t help but smile. He couldn’t wait to hold him in his arms.

“Imagine having someone to talk to about cars, sports… someone to play football with!”

“What if it’s another girl?” my aunt asked, just to tease him.

“It will be a boy! I love my daughters; they’re my little princesses. But this time I’m sure it will be a boy!”

There was so much hope in my father’s eyes that my aunt gave up teasing him. She didn’t say it out loud, but she secretly hoped that his wish would come true. It was certainly what he needed to be completely happy.

After a few minutes, the hospital corridor went strangely quiet, which only contributed to Dad’s anxiety. All that could be heard were his footsteps, as he paced back and forth. He simply couldn’t remain quiet. He’d sit down, stand up, crack his knuckles, sigh, and sit down again.

Indeed, it was taking longer than usual.

Suddenly, the slam of a door pierced the silence. This time, even my aunt stood up. At the end of that long, empty corridor came a doctor. He was wearing a blue lab coat and his face mask was hanging around his neck. Was that a good sign? Was the baby OK?

Dad and my aunt met him halfway down the hall.

The doctor looked calm. For sure, everything was fine!

As the doctor came close, he said with a smile on his face, “Everything went well. The mother and baby are fine.”
