The Bible tells us of women who were truly special in their time, such as Rebekah, Hannah (Samuel’s mother), Dorcas, Abigail, Esther, Ruth, Naomi, Deborah, Mary, Phoebe, Joanna, and the Samaritan woman (who introduced the Lord Jesus to her people). They were all virtuous women, just as the one described by King Solomon in Proverbs 31:10-31.
The author dedicates this book to all virtuous women today: mothers, businesswomen, domestic workers, and homemakers – hard workers who despite all their daily duties, acknowledge that where they truly stand out is within their home, and the highest praise they could receive is exactly what the Word of God says: “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many daughters have done virtuously, but you excel them all’” (Proverbs 31:28,29).
The Bible reveals two types of women: the wise and the foolish. The difference between them is simply in the quality of their faith. Wise King Solomon once wrote, “Every wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands” (Proverbs 14:1).
A foolish woman allows her feelings to take control of her life, undoing any vestiges of faith she has. Her emotions speak loudly inside her, to the point of confusing her thinking, making what is wrong seem right. So instead of fighting her problems, she becomes indifferent to them – not to mention her inner battles, which prevent her from knowing what her next step should be. And so, without faith, any action she takes leads to a troubled life.
A wise woman, however, never abandons her household. She’s faithful and stands firm until her home is well established. She doesn’t get discouraged as time passes, for she lives by faith, which makes her see beyond her circumstances. Faith isn’t limited by time or circumstances but is rather a deep certainty that no one can take away.
Single women are also included in this context, for the Word of God doesn’t say that “every wise wife builds her house”, it says “every wise woman”.
No matter how difficult a problem becomes, a wise woman doesn’t take time off from faith. For her, it’s all or nothing; this is true faith. Giving up isn’t an option; after all, she’s a warrior, a woman of God. Most people can’t see her faith, her indescribable inner force; but later on, they’ll see its fruit. The Word of God also says, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her worth is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10).
Women who have this kind of faith are priceless before God and men. How about you? Have you given in to your problems, or are you living the faith that guarantees your future with God?
