Repentance is a Bible subject. That is understood by all. However, there is much disagreement about what the Bible says and teaches about the subject. Sadly, many people who claim to believe in salvation by grace teach repentance (wrongly) exactly as do people who believe in salvation by works. This booklet gives a clear, concise, scriptural explanation of the truth of the matter.

The booklet you have in your hands is not purported to be the last word on the subject of repentance; the BIBLE is the last word on the subject. However, many people seem to have conflicting understandings of what the Bible says about repentance. Therefore, books such as these are helpful for clarification of the Bible's teaching on controversial subjects.
Jack Hyles has an excellent chapter on repentance in his book, "Enemies of Soul-Winning." The late evangelist Curtis Hutson also wrote a fine booklet on the topic. However, you probably have not read either work, so perhaps my little volume here will be of help to you.
I have had this book in the drafting stage for some time. I received some extra motivation, however, to complete the book, from a prayer meeting I attended with a couple of local pastors recently. While we were on our knees taking turns in prayer, a preacher next to me said something like, "And, Lord, please straighten out Brother Mike on repentance. I don't want to talk to him about it, Lord, but I pray you'll help him see the truth."
Ha! Ha! This particular preacher, by the way, claims to have gotten settled on the doctrine of Christ's deity by a personal appearance of Christ in his bedroom one night. No fooling! I suppose he is expecting the Lord to show up in my bedroom one night and show me my misunderstanding on this topic. Well, I didn't learn about Christ's deity from a vision, and I didn't learn about repentance from a vision. What I know from scripture is what God has revealed through the inner counsel of the Holy Ghost and a careful study of His word since I was saved in 1968.
Another funny thing about that preacher's comment was that he and I have NEVER ONCE discussed the subject. I have never told him what I believe about repentance. He has never asked me what I believe. To the best of my knowledge he has never heard me preach on it. Therefore, the following little study should help explain, for him and anyone else interested, exactly what my position is about repentance. More importantly, it will set forth the BIBLE'S teaching on repentance.
It is possible for a person to hold to a scriptural position on repentance which embraces neither the "Lordship salvation" heresy nor an "easy believism" doctrine that would declare almost everyone to be a Christian.
This booklet is an edited transcription of a Bible study taught at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia on Wednesday, July 10, 1996.
INTRODUCTION
Acts 20:17-21 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. 18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, 19 Serving the LORD with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: 20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, 21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the above passage pay particular attention to verse 21:
Acts 17:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
As Paul preached publicly and from house to house, he preached "repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ."
Many of our church families have scripture signs in their yards. One of our men regularly rotates the verses of scripture which appear on those signs. One of the scriptures I have had in my yard said,
Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
I do believe in repentance.
My favorite scripture to have on the sign, which scripture I kept on it for a number of months, is:
Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
What IS "repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ"? (Acts 17:21)
