Born to a Romanian father and a French mother, Eugène Ionesco (1909-1994) arrived in France a year after his birth and became a French citizen in 1951. His theatrical works (The Bald Soprano, 1950; The Lesson, 1951; The Chairs, 1952, etc.) made their mark in the world of literature: today he is considered to be one of the most performed French playwrights in the world. Anxious to be understood, he also left many commentaries on his work (Notes and Counter Notes, 1962; Fragments of a Journal, 1967, etc.). He was elected a member of the French Academy in 1970.
Ionesco was the leader of the Theatre of the Absurd, a new theatrical genre that appeared in the aftermath of the Second World War and shook up the rules of classical theater.
