'I am strength I am power I am courage I am revolution I am Amber Rai' Amber is trapped – by her family's rules and expectations, and by her own fears. But on the running track she feels free. As her body speeds up, the world slows down. And the tangled, mixed-up words in her head start to make sense... It's time to start a revolution: for her mother, for her sister, for herself. Run, Amber. Run. Manjeet Mann's multi-award-winning verse novel, Run, Rebel, about a young woman beginning to take control of her life, was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal 2021 and won the CILIP Carnegie Shadowers Choice Award, a UKLA Book Award, a Diverse Book Award and the Sheffield Children's Book Award. This fast-paced, mesmerising stage version, adapted by the author, was first produced in 2023 by Pilot Theatre, with Mercury Theatre, Colchester, Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Derby Theatre and York Theatre Royal. This edition also contains a range of teaching materials and resources designed to help educators bring the play to life for their students. 'Mann's brilliant, coruscating verse novel lays out the anatomy of Amber's revolution, and the tentative first flowerings of hope and change'Guardian

ACT ONE
AMBER. We all have a story to tell. Every one of us.
She points to members of the audience.
You have a story.
You have a story.
I bet you have a story.
I can tell you have a story.
You have a story, you have a story…
Every. Single. One of us has a story to tell.
And we should be allowed to tell it right?
We should take control of it,
we should own it.
It’s the only way to be truly free.
I’m Amber. I’m fifteen and I live here,
Palm Wood Estate.
One of the roughest and biggest estates in the country.
Streets-in-the-sky dreams
turned to sinkhole nightmares.
A bunch of concrete towers,
looming over you.
Windows like Mona Lisa eyes,
watching you, following you, there’s no hiding…
I live in that house,
with my mum and dad.
I’ve got an older sister, Ruby,
but she doesn’t live with us any more.
So, this is it.
My story.
I’ve waited a long time to tell it.
All the secrets I’ve been holding inside
about dreams so big.
A love so grand,
a life half lived.
About Mum, about Ruby, about Dad, about me.
How we fought.
How we survived.
How we ran.
How we rebelled.
How we broke free.
First day back at school.
She runs.
Past the bookie’s,
the chippy,
the newsagent’s.
Dodge the dog shit,
down a dirty alley,
past the garage,
till I get to…
AMBER stops.
St Martin’s Church!
My sanctuary.
Open skies
away from prying eyes.
TARA and DAVID enter.
Here they are,
my bezzy mates.
Tara and David.
They say three’s a crowd
but not with us.
TARA. AmberAmberAmber! I’ve missed your beautiful face!
