Prologue
Saint Carlo
When we first printed this book, Carlo Acutis had recently been beatified by the Catholic Church. The beatification ceremony on October 10, 2020, was the second-to-last step on the path to sainthood. Carlo died of leukemia—a type of cancer—in 2006 at the age of fifteen. Now, with his canonization on April 27, 2025, Carlo is the first millennial to become a saint in the Church. A millennial is anybody who was born between the years 1981 and 1996. The Catholic Church has declared more than ten thousand people saints, but only a small fraction of them died as children or teenagers. Carlo is special—even among the saints.
The beatification Mass was celebrated by Cardinal Agostino Vallini. The Cardinal is a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. This is the group that oversees the process and steps of sainthood. That lovely fall day at the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy, over three thousand people were present for the ceremony. In addition to the people in the church, people across the city watched the Mass on screens that had been set up. Carlo’s body was laid in a coffin in the church. He is dressed in a track jacket, his favorite pair of jeans, and a pair of Nike sneakers.
