The surprise on her face quickly turned to gratitude as she took the items and used them to catch his interest. Some things interested him for about thirty seconds, but one puzzle in particular seemed to hold his attention for almost fifteen minutes. That had to be some kind of record. Although I didn’t get much out of the service, I got a lot out of watching her at work. Eventually, he figured out where all of the fun things originated and somehow ended up in her lap pulling things out of her purse.

Introduction

Through books we come into contact with everything important that has happened in the past, analyzing also current events and putting our thoughts together to predict the future. The book is a window to the world, acquiring valuable knowledge and sparking our vivid imagination. It is a means of entertainment and is generally seen as a best friend, or as a slave that carries together all valuable information for us. The book is a friend who stays together without demands, a friend you call upon at every moment and abandon when you want.

It accompanies us in the hours of boredom and loneliness, while at the same time it entertains us. In general, a book does not ask anything from us, while it waits patiently on a dusty shelf to give us its information, to get us out of dead ends and to travel us to magical worlds.

This may be the travel mission of our books. Abstract narration, weird or unconscious thoughts difficult to be understood, but always genuine and full of life experiences, these are stories of life that can’t be overlooked easily.

This may be the start of something amazing!

Chapter One

“Why were you firing Shannon?” Eric asked as soon as we joined the end of the line.

“I never intended to fire Shannon,” Ian replied.

“Why did you think you were getting canned, Shannon?” Derek asked.

“Well, I...um...didn’t recognize Ian when he showed up so I tried to kick him off the floor.”

“Oh wow,” Eric said with a laugh, “that must have been something. Who did you think he was?”

“Edward told me about two programmers that made it past the security measures and got up to our floor so I thought he was one of them.”

“You heard about us!” Derek exclaimed. “Hey Eric, you and I are famous!”

“You were the two that did that?” I asked in what sounded to my own ears a bit like awe.

“Yep,” Eric acknowledged.

“Why would you do that?”

“Edward didn’t tell you the whole story?”

“There’s more to the story?”

“Heck yeah, there is,” Derek replied. “Ian made us do it.”

“You did?” I asked turning to Ian in surprise. “Why?”

“We wanted to double check our security measures and see if we’d missed something,” he explained before adding, “Obviously, we had.”

“Why ask Eric and Derek to find the problem? I mean, I know they’re programmers, too, but why didn’t the Geeks just do it themselves?”

“Eric and Derek have a specific...er...skill set that makes them perfect for the job.”

“Skill set...?”

“We’re actually hardcore hackers,” Derek whispered, “but don’t tell anyone.”

“What does that mean...exactly...?” I whispered back.

“It means that we find holes in programs.”

“Why are we whispering? I mean, that’s a good thing, right?”

“Only when it’s...um...authorized,” Eric replied in a low tone.

“Are you saying you hack things illegally?”

“We used to when we were younger,” Eric admitted, “Until Ian came along and showed us the error of our ways.”

“Wow, just wow,” I said shaking my head in amazement. “So, you hacked in to the elevator program and fixed the problem for the Geeks?”

“Actually, we hacked in and showed the Geeks how we did it so then they fixed the problem,” Eric explained.

“We’re decent programmers,” Derek chimed in, “but we’re awesome hackers.”

“Once they got it fixed,” Eric continued, “we couldn’t get past it no matter what we tried.”

“That’s so...you’re all so smart...I don’t even know what to...oh, oh no, I forgot to hold up the right amount of fingers,” I said with a frown before facing Ian and asking, “How many do I hold up? Do I count you or do you count yourself...?”

“I’ve already taken care of it.”

“You did? Okay...well...um...thanks.”

“No problem.”

“So, enough about us,” Eric said. “You never told us where you were from, Shannon.”

“I was born and raised in Rockpointe...a town about an hour and a half east of here.”

“So you’re a true Texan, too,” Derek said, “Cool.”

“Are you and Eric Texans?”
